Hana, sunsets, & cliffs

Wednesday we drove the road to Hana. Mrs. P had a guide book that gave us some good places to see waterfalls and other neat stuff. Our first stop was a bit of a hike to see the falls, but there was a fruit stand that (apparently) had the best banana bread. We convinced the whole group to drive around the southern part of the road, even though it's recommended not to take rental cars on it. It's really not that bad. We didn't start on that section soon enough to catch the sunset, but it was still a pretty drive.

Thursday was a little more low-key. The Pollard group drove south on Kihei road to see Big Beach and the site if the last volcano eruption back in the 1700s. The lava fields were similar to the Big Island. At the very end of the road was a very cool cove that sometimes has dolphins. We didn't see any though. That night was our sunset dinner cruise. It was so windy that the captain pulled in behind some cliffs while we had dinner so everything didn't blow away. There were only about 50 people onboard the boat that holds 150, so there was plenty of space for everyone.

Friday the Pollard group decided to drive around the smaller side of the island. We made a stop at Black Rock beach for a little snorkeling & sun action. The views along that drive are beautiful. So different from the drive to Hana. We stopped at Olivine Pools, which Jeff & I had never seen before. It was quite a hike down to the pools, but it was amazing to be that close to the rough ocean, yet completely protected by the rocks. We were a couple of turns away from the little store I bought a raku pot at last time when we had to turn around. Some stupid drive was reckless and almost drive their jeep down the cliff. The road was blocked off do we couldn't drive the last 15 miles to complete the loop. Since we had a little bit more time than planned, Jeff & I walked around Lahaina before heading back to Kihei for dinner at Fred's mexican. Great margaritas!

Today (Saturday), we're headed to Oahu. Our plane leaves in about an hour. :)

Molokini

Yesterday we spent the day on a Pacific Whale Foundation snorkel boat to Molokini. It's the same tour we did back in 2003. The waters out to Molokini were much calmer this time around, and no one got sick. We were near the end if the group when we boarded, so most if us ended up with seats inside. Luckily we were allowed to wander the boat after we got underway, so Jeff & I stood at the bow the whole time.

I didn't do any snorkeling (shocker!),but I did take plenty of pictures. I hear it was pretty good out at Molokini. We were supposed to go to Lana'i next, but the swells were too high so we ended up on the west coast of Maui. Not as much in the water there, but I did get to see a green sea turtle. It came to the surface right next to the boat very cool.

Paradise

I think I'm ready to move here. If they could only do something about the stupid roaches.

Yesterday Team Rhines took a helicopter tour in the morning while Team Pollard hung out at Kanaole Beach III for a while. Jeff & I got a good start to our tan (or burn in my case). We all met up for lunch in the picnic area, then headed towards Ka'anapali for a little shopping at Whalers Village & dinner at the Hula Grill. Jeff & I ate there twice on our honeymoon.

After dinner we drove to a beach park just north of Lahaina to watch the sunset & 4th of July fireworks.

Today we relaxed by the pool in the morning while Team Rhines explored Big Beach. We're now on our way to the top of Haleakala. Road is starting to get curvy, so I must stop typing. :)
