September 3, 2008Still here, just barely

Last night I took my first Pilates class in 3 months. Needless to say, I'm pretty sore. Back in June I found out that the gym I had just recently joined was going to be closing (rent was too high). I decided not to join anotherone , for various reasons, but I do miss Pilates & Yoga. It's a shame everywhere is so expensive. And crowded.

March 24, 2008Happy Birthday to me

In the weeks prior to my birthday I was slightly panicky and a little depressed about turning 30. However, on the day of (and the day before), I was surprisingly calm. As I tend to not like surprises much, I get jittery the day my office desk is decorated and when I wake up on my birthday I'm nervous, anticipating what may, or may not, happen that day. This year was different for some reason; I had no expectations or fears. It feels strange having to check that other box on surveys and forms, but everyone has said turning 40 is harder; good thing I have 10 more years to go.

As a birthday present to myself I joined a gym last week; New Fitness for Ladies is right in between work and home, so it's pretty convenient. I started out 3 weeks ago by taking a pilates class and was hooked. It made much more sense to join than pay per class, so now I'm a card carrying member. I've been to 3 pilates and 2 yoga classes and have really enjoyed both. I have also had my first 2 appointments with an instructor to set up my schedule on the weight and cardio machines. I figure my goal in all this is to look, and feel, better in my 30s than I did in my 20s.

March 18, 2008Contacts

Evil things!Friday I had my first, and possibly last, encounter with contact lenses. Technically this was my second try at getting them in, but the first one doesn't really count since it never happened. This time I took a coworker with me for support and after an hour I finally got them in and out the first time. I had to do it 2 more times before I could leave the doctor's office, but I did it both times without too much trouble.

Later that evening my distance vision was still a little blurry so I wanted to take them out before I went out. Unfortunately I had such a hard time doing so that I ended up canceling my plans. When Jeff got home he tried to help out, best he could; he even tried taking them out for me. It was close to midnight before I was finally able to do it and I was just exhausted.

I've tried to put them back in a couple of times since then, but I get so panicked at the thought of having to take them out that I just can't do it. Maybe I'll look into Lasik next...

March 4, 2008Bon Jovi & Daughtry...can it get any better?

For Christmas Jeff completely surprised me with tickets to go see Bon Jovi at the Verizon Center in DC on February 28. Finding out that Daughtry was the opening act only sweetened the deal!

During the drive up we decided to park at Franconia-Springfield and take the Metro in. I don't think it really saved us any money, but it sure was nice not to have to battle city traffic! The concert started at 7:30 and we got to the Verizon Center shortly after 6. We were allowed in the building, but were blocked from entering the arena area and finding our seats. Luckily the wait wasn't too bad and we were within the first 100 people to have our tickets scanned.

Our seats were in the lower rows of the nosebleed section (the concert was sold out, Jeff was lucky to find tickets at all!), but it was closer to the stage which was situated at one end of the arena.

Daughtry came out right on time at 7:30 and played for about 45 minutes. It a shame it wasn't longer; he's really good. There was only one song I didn't recognize, I suppose it will be on a new album. It was cool to see him in concert after watching American Idol (Season 5). He sooo should have won that year.

There was a brief break while the stage was reset and then Bon Jovi come out. They opened with Lost Highway (appropriate since it's the Lost Highway Tour). I had no idea how they would figure out the setlist because they have so many good songs. They ended up playing a really good mix of old and new stuff; kept the crowd engaged for about 3 hours.

Right in the middle of the setlist Jon walked offstage to let Richie step up and sing a song (it was really good by the way). When the next song started the spotlight was in the middle of the crowd on the floor where Jon was set up on a mini-stage to sing (You Want To) Make a Memory. Richie came down for the next song, Bed of Roses which they really mixed up into a much slower ballad. It was kinda cool. The girls standing close by looked like they were about to faint.

For 46 years old, Jon sure does have a lot of energy. During Faith he was shaking maracas and jumping all around the stage the entire time. They really put on a great show and I would love to see them again.

Setlist:
Lost Highway
Bad Name
Raise Your Hands
Runaway
Capt. Crash
Sleep w/ Jumpin' Jack Flash
In These Arms
Whole Lot of Leavin'
Born To Be My baby
Blaze of Glory w/ Knockin' On Heaven's Door intro
We Got It Goin' On
It's My Life
Bad Medicine w/ Shout
Stranger
(You Want To) Make a Memory
I'll Be There for You
Bed of Roses
Who Says You Can't Go Home
Have a Nice Day
Faith
Prayer

Encore:
Wanted
I Love This Town

January 23, 2008The start of a new year

2008 hasn't exactly started off on the right note for me. January 2nd, my first day back at work I started feeling not so hot. By Friday I could barely swallow so I went to the doctor. Strep throat was the diagnosis. I haven't had strep since I was a kid! I had been off the antibiotics maybe 4 days when it started feeling sore again. I figured it wasn't a relapse when it stopped hurting, but I practically lost my voice. Oh, and the coughing began. And then there was more coughing. I finally went to the doctor today, after a week, and was diagnosed with upper respiratory infection. Even the doctor wished me a better February and I hope she's right!

As I've been really, really slacking with posting, I'm just going to recap the latter part of 2007 instead of writing separate entries for each event:

Colorado
In the middle of November Jeff and I went to Colorado for our big ski-themed vacation. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative and decided not to provide us any snow that week. Nonetheless, we managed to get in one day of skiing, even if it was mostly man-made snow. Instead we drove around. A lot. But we did get to see a lot of the area, including a train to Pikes Peak, (not so) fine dining at Casa Bonita, a nighttime view of Boulder & Vail and a spontaneous 2 day trip to South Dakota. I think that was the most fun.
We had planned to make the drive to Devil's Tower (WY) and Mt Rushmore (SD) in one day, so we didn't bring any overnight stuff. Half way there we decided it was silly to rush, we should just spend the night. After stopping at Devil's Tower we braved the frigid winds and saw Mt Rushmore at night, then found a hotel in Rapid City. We had to make a trip to Wal Mart for toiletries and clean shirts for the next day, but what a great trip that was!

Christmas comes early
Jeff & I treated ourselves quite a a bit this year with new gadgets and electronics. Before my trip to Biloxi I purchased a new camera and phone. To top that off Jeff found an awesome deal on the HD Tivo he just couldn't pass up, so we got one of those. Then the TV in our bedroom died so we bought a new 26in flat panel to replace it. At some point in there we got a Wii, but I can't remember when that was.

Christmas
This year was our turn to head west to Arkansas to visit with my parents. It had been over a year since I'd seen them so it was really nice to spend the week there. My brother & his girlfriend were only able to come for Christmas day, but we got to go visit him a few days later (they live about 2 hours away from my parents). As usual the menagerie of animals kept us all entertained. 3 cats, 2 dogs, 1 outside cat (he was the only smart one who stayed away!), and 6 people were quite a handful. We're hoping to host Christmas at our place next year, that should be interesting.

New Years
Kelly & Eric played host to the new year festivities. This time Jeff & I chose to spend the night rather than having to drive home with the crazies on the road in the early morning hours. We missed everyone who couldn't be there, but I think we had a great time. Some of us have spent the last 9 New Year's Eves together. Hard to believe.

October 13, 2007Belated or early Arbor Day?

October Glory
Last weekend Jeff & I picked up another tree from Lowes to plant in our side yard (living room side of the house). It's an October Glory Maple, similar to the one we planted last year.

We're still hoping (I think) to work on the deck before it gets too cold. We're just running out of weekends. October always seems to be so busy.

Speaking of, Jeff is currently in Pennsylvania at the annual Tacober Fest, a big east-coast gathering of Custom Tacos members. I wasn't able to go this year because I, along with Chris H, Karen & Nick, will be flying to Biloxi, MS tomorrow afternoon for a week. Brian will be joining us on Tuesday.

We're going down there to work with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for Katrina survivors. Chris & Karen went back in January and had such a good time they organized another trip and invited anyone who could go, to come along. I'm really looking forward to the week. I think it'll be a great learning experience and it'll be nice knowing I'm really helping out and hopefully making a difference in someone's life.

I may not get a chance to blog any while I'm down there, but I'll be sure to do so when I get back.

October 8, 2007Continuing the gadget craze

To follow up my recent iPhone purchase I bought a new digital camera this weekend. My little Sony, while still in perfectly good condition, was just not producing print-quality pictures. And as a scrapbooker, printing is very important! I was initially looking at Nikon but never found one that met all of my criteria. I ended up choosing the 8-megapixel Canon SD870 (in silver), which I bought at Best Buy (and took advantage of the tax free weekend).

Next week, during my trip to Biloxi, I should get a chance to really test it out. What I've done so far has been great. It's lightweight and small despite having a 3in LCD. The delay between flash-enabled pictures is minimal and it has face recognition, which is kinda cool.

October 3, 2007Consolidating gadgets

After several years of lugging around a PDA and a phone, contact information never getting updated in one or the other and just the hassle of keeping up with multiple devices I finally broke down and got myself an iPhone. Thanks to the price reduction and Jeff's $100 store credit from the phone he bought for work, the price wasn't too bad; even for the 8gb. And the iPhone has so many cool features!

There's a lot of room for expansion/improvement as far as software, including games, but the hardware and the interface is just too cool. Oh, and my phone plan now includes 200 text messages/mo so I don't have to pay $.10/ea anymore. So everyone text away!

March 14, 2007Forgetful

I have been aggresively working on my scrapbooking for the past few weeks, trying to get caught up. Since I'm so far behind (2003), I've been relying a lot on my blog entries to help me remember details about specific events. After reading through a few month's of entries I'm saddened by the fact I just don't blog much anymore. I used to write about all kinds of things that happened throughout the day and now I'm lucky just to remember what happened last week.

In fact, I started this entry last Friday and am now just getting to post it. I was going to write some more, but I forgot what I was going to say. Arg.

September 27, 2006Attack of the weeds!

Wow, almost 2 months since I've even started to blog. I think that's my personal best! (or worst).

Here's the highlights:

Work:
Lost 4 people from our division; 2 are manager level positions with one above the other, so the interim director has 3 jobs to do now
3 of the people that left went to the same agency (hmm...)
Purchasing was cut in half with the losses meaning there are fewer people to process orders
Orders have not slowed down
Been working overtime every week just to keep up
Submitted application to upgrade my position to the next level (with pay increase)
Found out last week it was approved; yay!

Family:
My parents came to visit over Labor Day; it was a short visit, but it was really good to see them
My mom made potato salad & pie mmmmmm
Jeff's parents, Jennifer & Chris came over too and we cooked out
My parents brought me 7 boxes of my old toys and things
Bruce wants to move so if anyone knows of any jobs around here in the photography field please let me know :)
Jennifer quit her job, but not before securing a new one with a pay increase

Friends:
Chris's company decided to downsize, but he landed on his feet with a new job right away (congrats to you both!)
Maggie & Quentin had a baby girl the day we left for Hawaii; she's so cute!
Brian is making waves in the Lego community with his Brickworkz mosaics; playing with Legos rules! Err, rulez!

Home:
I now have 7 new boxes of stuff to deal with (thanks mom & dad)
We have finally taken control of the weeds in the backyard; hopefully grass will start to grow soon
The sunroom has been painted bright green to kick off the Hawaiian theme we're trying to do in there
We finally found a couple of chairs for the sunroom
New storage shed lets me park in the garage now
We planted a tree in the back yard

Personal:
Tabb had it's 10 year reunion last Saturday; Jeff & I toured the school in the morning but ditched the main event to spend some time with Melissa at her daughter's 2nd birthday party
I finally got my new license plate
My glasses broke one night right after I got home from work so I had to buy some new ones (that sucked)
I went off the deep end and cut my hair really short last week

June 28, 2006Lava flows & black sand beaches, here I come!

On the eve of Fiscal Year End 2006 I wait with much anticipation as to what may occur. As in past years, the financial situation has been volatile, however, it's never been quite like this. Within a matter of hours yesterday we went from having no money, to having lots of money (process everything now!), back to having no money again. If my head's spinning from thinking about all this, I can't imagine how the finance director and budget manager handle it all..

Work has been, to say the least, extremely busy the last few weeks. I can't say I'll miss the long days, working from home, and constant ringing of the phones. Unfortunately, even after tomorrow's deadline of 4pm comes and goes, I'll still be working my butt off getting ready to leave everything in my coworker's hands.

It's amazing how much has to be done to finalize everything I'm working on now, to leave as few loose ends as possible. When you work pretty much solo, you can't just drop everything and expect someone else to know what the heck is going on. So on top of processing what's currently on my desk, I have to leave detailed instructions on how to handle things while I'm gone.

But once I'm on that plane, you can bet I won't be thinking about work!

In other good news, we are finally single house-home owners. Our buyer was supposed to close on the 16th, but the day of the closing decided to switch lenders. Legally, we could sue her for any costs incurred during this delay, but it would cost more in legal fees than what it's worth. But we did receive notification yesterday that she closed on the house so now it's completely over with, which is a good feeling.

I know there have been other things I wanted to talk about, but the last few weeks have been so exhausting that any odd thought that wasn't completely relevant to the moment passed through my brain immediately, leaving room for much more important things.

Maybe I'll be functioning at 100% in August. :)

March 24, 2006A little humor goes a long way

This morning started off pretty well, then turned sour as more and more people did or said something that really bugged me. Knowing I was going to have to be making a lot of phone calls & talking to more people today, I was not looking forward to the rest of my afternoon. The first company I called put me on hold right away, but instead of some cheesy music or advertisements, it was a comedian. I have no idea how long I was on hold, I didn't really care. It was a welcome change and definitely put me in a better mood.

March 22, 2006Spring has...sprung?

Well, so much for the beginning of Spring. The spike in temperature last week was just a tease as the snow fell pretty steadily for a while last night. I was hoping for a snow day as a birthday present, but no such luck.

Work on the house is progressing nicely. Jeff and I watched them put in the window on the landing of the stairs Monday evening. And that must mean they finally put the stairs in. We have both monkeyed up to the second floor, but it'll be nice not to have to do that again. I'm not sure what the next step is, maybe we'll find out tonight.

Selling of the townhouse has become somewhat a pain in the butt. I've had to run home 4 or 5 times in the last couple weeks, in the middle of the day, to do a quick clean up and get Gizmo. And that's not including 2 showings this weekend. I just don't understand why we're not getting more offers. What have we done wrong? I think we're going to have an open house this Sunday, so I'm hoping that will bring in someone with more potential.

Not much else to report, just another year older. I think Bon Jovi's song, Just Older will be my theme song this year.

November 8, 2005Car pics

Here are some pictures of my car that Jeff took on one of the scenic overlooks on on 64.

November 6, 2005Tell her what she's won, Rod

A new car!!

That's right folks, I have a new car. A few weeks ago I intended to blog about my search for a new car, but unfortunately never took the time to do so. I was even going to put a poll so you could vote on which car I should get. Yeh, that didn't happen either.

Jeff had been hounding me to start thinking about getting a new car for a while. The Cavalier is 7 years old and starting to show some age. I thought that with buying a new house and all, we shouldn't be spending the money on a new car. But when one of the brackets holding my muffler broke or came loose, I changed my mind. The constant rattle was driving me batty. Jeff even pulled out the (teal) zip-ties and ghetto fixed it for a while but they either melted or stretched out cause the rattle came back.

I went into the car search wanting something practical, yet fun. And I was really hoping for the color to be orange. So, naturally, I gravitated toward the Mazdas, specifically the Mazda 3 Wagon, and the copper red color it comes in. Also, the Wagon version reminded me of the old Civic Hatchbacks, which I really liked.

Jeff of course was leaning towards a Toyota (no need to explain that one), so I wanted to check out the Matrix as well.

The Scion tC was another car I put on the list too. I wasn't really looking for a 2-door car, but liked the look of the tC and wanted to check it out.

We test drove all 3 one Saturday afternoon. I was pretty nervous about that part at first. I've never particularly liked driving with other people in the car, especially strangers so I wasn't looking forward to the test drives. Luckily, both dealerships allowed us to take the car out on our own. I guess we looked like responsible adults, not just crazy kids. That was a relief, and made testing the car out and getting a feel for it easier.

The Mazda, outside, was just what I was looking for; I loved the hatchback rear and the spacious passenger and cargo areas. The interior detail however, was not so impressive. The seat fabric comes in 2 colors: black with blue accents or black with red accents. Neither were really great, and the fabric, I thought, was kind or scratchy, and cheap feeling. It was probably meant to be a durable, rugged look, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. Rubbed, get it? Fabric rubbed? Nevermind.

It drove and handled great, no complaints there. The dash layout/functionality left something to be desired. We never did figure out how to operated the radio during the test drive. It's this weird one knob does everything set up. I guess that's what they make manuals for though.

The next car we drove was the tC. Unfortunately for me, it started raining while I was on the interstate. But, it was a good way to test how it did in the rain. The tC had a more sportscar feel than the Mazda, but, obviously, it being a 2-door car, had less passenger/cargo space. And it didn't come in orange.

The interior however, was great. The seats were so comfortable and the detail out into the dash, and cup holders, even the change tray, was amazing. For a cheap car, it had some great features.

We drove the Matrix next, also in some rain. After driving the other 2 cars, I was hoping the Matrix would be the perfect blend of the functionalty the Mazda Wagon had, and the comfortable interior the tC had. Unfortunately, it had neither.

Yes, it is a wagon, but the rear passenger area seemed very cramped. The dash wasn't as 'fancy' and the engine was terribly loud. Overall, very disappointed in the Matrix.

Not having any other cars I was really interested in, I went back and forth for a long time between the Mazda 3 Wagon and the Scion tC and made (mental) pros and cons lists for each car.

SciontC...
Eventually I decided I wanted to pursue the tC. We went back to McGeorge and talked with our sales rep about finding one in the area in the color I wanted, Flint Mica, or just ordering one from Toyota. He indicated they were to get another allotment soon, so he would let us know what he could find out.

Last Monday, when Jeff called him, we found out that another customer backed out ona car that had been ordered for him so they had one sitting on the lot to sell. The only problem was it had a lot of extras we didn't want. The sales rep was going to talk to his manager about taking some of it off, and selling us the car.

By Friday we hadn't heard from him. Jeff called again to find out what was up and was told our car had been ordered and it would be in at the end of the month. Frustrated by this guy's lack of communication, Jeff called up McDonough Toyota, in Staunton. He had seen a Flint Mica tC on their inventory sheet and wanted to know more about it.

Turns out it was the exact car we wanted. We talked about it and decided to tell McGeorge to give us our deposit back and take our name off the car that was being ordered. We had given them a week to find a car in the area, and Jeff had even mentioned the one at McDonough. Not really sure what happened there.

So Saturday we drove to Staunton and bought a car.

As sad as I am about giving up the Cavalier, I love my new car. It has a double sunroof, radio controls on the steering wheel, and a little hook thing to hold the floor mat in place! I know, but it's the little things. :)

Having a 2-door car is going to take some getting used to, but I think I can do it.

Oh! Two more things, McDonough gave us $250 more than either McGeorge or CarMax would, for the Cavalier. And I got a $100 gift card to Sheetz. It was definitely worth the drive.

November 6, 2005October craziness is over

For as far back as I can remember (which isn't very far!), October has been one of the busiest months. I don't know why, and this year was no different. Three weekends out of town and one weekend with 2 parties didn't leave much free weekend time.

It doesn't help that work has been absolutely crazy busy. We're in the processing of overhauling the accounting/purchasing procedures and this has increased my workflow a lot already.

Right now the College uses American Express as the credit card of choice, and most departments have 1, 2 or more people with a card. This allows them to purchase items on their own, without ever having to get Accounting involved.

With all the new procurement guidelines that are being placed upon us, it's time to start cracking down on these people who can just spend, spend, spend. As of December we're switching to Mastercards and only issuing a handful. So all those purchases that people were making on their own are now going to have to come through Purchasing, and then to Accounting.

While this is putting more work on us, we'll be able to have more control over purchases made college-wide, and that's the way it should be. It does make for a busy day though and the feeling that I'm never caught up.

As you know, we celebrated our first anniversary a few weeks ago, and last week we finally received our album from our photographers. While it did seem to take an awful long time for it to arrive, the blame is definitely ours in taking an extraordinarily long time in choosing the pictures.

The album though, looks great! I haven't weighed it yet, but it's pretty hefty. The pictures turned out beautiful though. I wish I could print digital pictures that clear.

This week will be the end for my Tai Chi class. I have really enjoyed it and plan to take it again in the spring. And hope I haven't forgotten everything I've learned! In the meantime, Michaels offers a lot of crafty classes so a coworker of mine and I have been contemplating a cake decorating class. It's been nice to do something different at night other than watch tv.

October 7, 2005Part Wild Horses Mane

Last night began the first of a month-long Tai Chi class that several of us from work are taking through Henrico County Recreation & Parks. I've never taken Tai Chi and wasn't really sure what to expect. To make it simple, if you've ever seen the Celebrex commercials with the older folks in the field doing the martial arts-looking moves, that's Tai Chi.

It was a little strange at first, some of the exercises we started off with were different, but once we got into actually learning the forms and going though the sequence, it got better.

What I've learned so far is that Tai Chi is about connecting with yourself, being in the present, and letting everything else go. It's not making sure you have your hand in the exact right position, but just going with the flow. The course we're taking teaches a 24 'form' sequence. Each form is repeated 2-4 times, switching between the left side and right side of the body. The forms have names, hence the title of this entry, but I haven't quite figured out what they mean yet.

I came out of the class feeling very relaxed and mellow. Considering how tense I was earlier in the day, I was quite impressed. I'm looking forward to the next class, should be fun!

June 13, 2005Season for change

I think the rising tempuratures (it's supposed to be 95 degrees tomorrow) have caused some of us to go a little off the deep end.

Thursday I took the afternoon off to get my hair cut and highlighted. Well, instead of getting the usual blonde highlights I came out a redhead! I've always loved red hair, but never thought I could pull off having it. Susan (my 'stylist') convinced me I could, so I went for it! So far I really like it and most other people have said the same. I don't have any pictures right now, but I'll post them when I do.

Not to be outdone by my spontaneous decision, Jeff went out on Saturday and bought himself a motorcycle! It seems 4 wheels just wasn't cutting it. After taking the Motorcycle Safety Training course last weekend, I knew it wouldn't be long until he started thinking about buying one.

I guess I don't need to feel guilty about buying that DVD at Target on Saturday now, do I?

In other, less exciting news, Jeff decided to pass his cold bug to me, so now I'm the one with the drippy sinus' and stuffy head. Hopefully I can kick this thing before the Lewis Family Reunion next weekend in North Carolina. We weren't able to go last year, but at least we got to see some people at the wedding.

Our new neighborhood is coming along nicely. The model and 2 other houses having framing up. This is going to be a really long wait.

June 11, 2005Pain in the ass?

Well, things aren't exactly back to normal. Turns out the sales guy at the Cingular store must have mistyped my number when switching me over from SunCom. So until the department who handles mistakes like this can fix it, my old phone number is out of service. Fortunately, the only difference is the last 2 numbers, they are now 63.

Since my old number is still attached to my old account, and still available, I should be able to get it back. Hopefully I'll hear something early next week. But until then, use my new number or just call Jeff. :)

June 8, 2005Back in business

Ok, so I went to the Cingular store during lunch. Luckily, I walked in as someone else was leaving so I was helped immediately. People who came in after me weren't so lucky. They were all still waiting when I left.

I had a choice of about 7 phones to replace my now defunct SunCom one. They ranged in price from $20 to $80, but were going to be free. I briefly glanced over the bunch, noticing that most were flip phones (which I'm afraid I'll never find in the depths of my purse), and promptly asked for the same thing I had, just in the 'Cingular' version.

So now I have the same exact phone, 2 ac chargers, 2 manuals, a new coverage plan (which is practically the same at this point), and an account in my name. All for the low, low price of...well, ok, so I didn't have to pay anything, but I did have to take a long lunch to deal with all this crap. Oh well.

At least I'm not one of those customers who were so upset that all Cingular stores now have security guards in them. People are crazy. It's just phone service. Sheesh.

So anywayz, point is, I'm back in business and taking calls! :)

Posted by Olivia at 6:32 PM | Comments (2)

June 8, 2005Out of order

CingularAs a former SunCom customer now being assimilated into the Cingular network I have joined the thousands of other customers who's old phones will no longer work on the Cingular network. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a letter telling me to come stand in a long line, I found out when Jeff tried to call me last night.

He said he tried several times and kept getting a message about the number not being correct. And anytime I tried to dial out, I would get a recording about Cingular's Sales Office hours. So I called this morning. Actually, I just tried calling Jeff because I hadn't written down the number, and I spoke to a nice young lady who informed me I would have to get a new phone.

I politely responded with, "but I never got a letter, and I just bought this phone and was not told it wouldn't work in a few months."

To which she replied, "Sorry, we sent out thousands of letters and it's been on the news."

So. There it is. Until further notice I can no longer be reached by cell phone.

October 6, 2004I need a vacation

I am so tired. Tired because I can't sleep at night thinking of all the things that need doing, will need doing, or what to do to make sure things go right.

And I'm not doing things because I'm tired of doing things, of thinking about them.

Don't worry, I'm not crazy, just stressed.

So many unexpected things have popped up in the last few days: Gizmo needed updates on his shots, so I made an appointment that unfortunately took longer than usual because of another emergency at the vet's. So that took more time from work, which meant I stayed late.

Afterwards I went to Lenscrafters to get new glasses. I tried to kill the hour wait by window shopping until my feet hurt. And then they weren't even ready. And now, I need to go back because I'm having trouble focusing; they must not have gotten the lenses right or something. So that's more time from work.

Normally taking extra time off of work wouldn't be a problem, but I'm trying to make sure things are cleaned up and straight before we leave next week. So I stay late to work on stuff, meaning I get home late, which makes me tired and not want to do the things that need doing.

And then of course we have other things to juggle: work obligations, friend obligations, house stuff, etc.

10 days....we have 10 days...that's just crazy!

Please, please let it not rain!!

June 8, 2004It only hurts when I breathe

For the last 4 or 5 days I've had a headache that just won't quit. Some hours are better than others, but today was definitely the worst. I can't think of anything that changed recently, no major stressors or change in eating habits, I can't figure out what's causing this constant pain. Besides a possible lack of sleep, does anyone have any ideas?

May 3, 2004Say hello to my Tungsten E

Tungsten E

After going almost a week without my Visor, due to it's unfortunate accident, I decided I had to replace it. With Jeff's suggestion, I was looking at the new Palm Zire 31, but once I saw it in person, was not impressed. The casing felt and looked very cheap, like a couple of plastic pieces just snapped together. The Zire 72 was a little better, with some sort of cool rubbery surface. But it cost a little more than what I was prepared to spend.

After pondering and spending way too much time walking around CompUSA, I made the snap decision to go with the Tungsten E, of Palm's professional line. It looks really cool with it's chrome casing, yet has all the functionality I need. All the familiar buttons at the bottom, plus a bright color screen make it just perfect! I love my new toy!!

December 21, 2003Flying high

So my Christmas plans have changed slightly. Instead of driving 14 hours to Arkanas I'll now be flying. After talking with Jeff we both came to the conclusion that I probably should not be on the road in my condition. So we hopped online and found a pretty good price for tickets. So I'm off to the airport tomorrow. Everyone travel safe!

December 5, 2003Blah

So I went to the doctor on Wednesday. After being up most of Tuesday night coughing, and not being able to get much sleep, I decided it was time to go. Turns out it's bronchitis. The doctor gave me lots of medicine which seems to be helping some. I actually got to sleep Wednesday day, which was really nice. Last night I didn't fare quite as well, so I'm pretty tired today. But I'm making it. I've been leaving work early everyday this week and today will probably be no different.

November 14, 2003Get the tissues ready

For the second time this week I left work early to go home and rest. Wednesday I could tell I was getting sick. I worked until the headache overtook me. Same with yesterday. I stayed long enough to suffer through our 3pm staff meeting, and then left at 4:30.

Why oh why must I always get a cold? Every single year. This is soooo annoying.

I feel better today after taking some medicine last night, but it's starting to wear off. The headache is looming and the sniffles have already started. A few more hours and I may be ready to go home.

August 18, 2003Close Encounters

Well, after making it through the obstacle course that is Friars Walk Lane, I got stuck behind some sort of forklift type machine out on Hunton Park Blvd. The guy driving was kinda weaving in the middle on the two-lane road so I stayed put. But then, as many of these people do, he pulled to the side and stopped. I thought "oh great! He's letting me pass!" So I sped up to go around him.

Less than a car length away I notice the arms of the forklift starting to swing my way and the front tires turning. "Oh shit!" I stepped on the gas and zoomed by.

As I looked back in my rearview mirror, I could see he had completely stopped and was looking ahead at me. I'm guessing he didn't even realize I was there and was a little freaked out having this car shoot by him. Had my car been any taller I just might have run into the forks. Yikes.

And as if that wasn't enough I get stuck behind a pickup on Staples Mill going under the speed limit who was riding just close enough to the dump truck in the other lane to make it impossible to pass. And then on Parham, same situation, different vehicles. Unfortunately, one of them was a really foul smelling garbage truck.

And then, on my way back from the bank, some girl was on her cell phone and almost made us miss the almost-shortest-left turn light in Richmond. That really pissed me off.

Then I hit a fairly big pothole.

And because of massive overgrown vines on a telephone pole I had to pull halfway out into the road to see if there was any traffic. Well, there was. Quick reverse back into hiding.

I think I've about had it for today. And it's only 12:30.

August 14, 2003Shopping Spree

Well, ok, so it wasn't really a shopping spree. It was more of a dash around the mall to find some much needed pants. Wednesday, when everyone else was at the Blues Traveler concert, I was at the mall.

And luckily I was fairly sucessful! I ended up walking out with 3 pairs of khaki pants, one pair of black pants and a dress. Oh, and 2 books.

The mall wasn't as crowded as it looked from the parking lot. Maybe the kids were all in the food court or something. It'll be nice when they go back to school.

August 14, 2003Brain...is..full

Today has been....tiring. There's really no other way to describe it. Too many problems to deal with make for a nasty headache looming over me. I think if I had to do one more stressful or even semi-stressful thing today I'll scream. Where's that hot tub when you need one?

August 5, 2003Restless sleeper

Did anyone hear the rain last night? I'm surprised I didn't, considering I didn't get to sleep until 3am.

Jeff and I started discussing wedding stuff (and no, I don't have anything to share just yet!) so by the time we went to bed my mind was just racing with all the stuff there's going to be to do. We got in bed at 12:30, and I know I didn't get to sleep before 3. Ugh.

April 22, 2003Memory loss

Don't you hate when you're at work or busy doing something else when a brilliant idea or random thought for a blog pops in your head? And you can't write it down?? Yeh, that's me today. I had all these things I was going to say and now I can't think of a single one. Figures.

April 10, 2003Random memories?

Ever have those moments when a certain song, smell or other sensory input suddenly reminds you of a long forgotten memory?

A few weeks ago I was eating fresh strawberries and just the smell reminded me of summer and my (maternal) grandparents. I have no idea why, I can't recall any specific event that included strawberries. If anything, it should be cheez-its and ginger snaps, but no, it was the strawberries.

And just now I turned on the radio to only to hear Cher with "If I Could Turn Back Time." I know I've probably heard the song dozens of times in the last few years, but this time conjured up images of the youth center in Myrtle Beach. I used to get those big sour candies, bleeps, and play foosball. And I distinctly hear that song playing there.

What makes you have random memories and what are they of?

March 27, 2003The longest day

Holy geez I'm bored. The only work I have to do is "piddly" stuff that's just a pain in the ass to have to deal with. You know, those random loose things that don't get taken care of until you're really bored or really motivated? Yeh, those.

And it's only 3 o'clock. I had to come in early for a staff meeting but I still have to stay till my normal time cause I keep coming in late and leaving early. So I need to make up my hours. What am I gonna do????

March 21, 2003It's Friday! It's Friday!

I was bad. Very bad. My plan last night was to go shopping for some "yoga" pants since the ones I had didn't fit. Well, I found what I was looking for...along with 3 other pairs of pants and 2 shirts. *ducking*

I don't feel bad about it though. That money was slated for my camera and since I don't need it for that..

And for clarification, no, I'm not doing yoga, that's just what they're calling those knit pants people wear to exercise in. I went with Kelly Z on Wednesday to the Jazzercise class she's been taking. I found that the pants I had just weren't going to work. The class was very similar to the aerobics classes I did at Radford. The moves were bouncier and more dance-like, but it was the same basic stuff. The one thing I didn't enjoy was that it was in a carpeted room. Rubber soled shoes stick. Oh well. I was thinking I might go back at give it another chance before saying no. I'd really like to find an aerobics, tae-bo or yoga class, but gyms are so expensive.

I got my workout last night though running up and down the stairs cleaning, vacuuming and doing laundry. Why didn't they put the washer and dryer on the second floor?? I can't imagine having the basement unit, with the laundry room on the bottom floor. Yikes!

It's my birthday!

Tonight I need to finish cleaning our bedroom and do the downstairs. We've been so busy lately I haven't even had time to unload the dishwasher. And this weekend is no different. Tomorrow I'm helping out the college in a "Campus Beautification" project, then joining the rest of the gang to help Mike & Lauren move. And Sunday, well, you guys know what I'm doing Sunday. :)

Today has been fairly uneventful. As usual, my coworkers decorated my office today. (It's done for everyone in the department) I had completely forgotten about it until I walked around the corner this morning.

You guys officially suck.

I can't think of much I hate worse than secrets. Especially secrets that involve me.

March 11, 2003A random collection

I had my follow up with the oral surgeon yesterday. You all should be glad to know I have a clean bill of health..oh wait, clean teeth..umm, no, that's wrong too. I've got it! "Yup, your teeth are gone. And you've got a big gaping hole in your gum. Now go home." Yeh, that's more like.

But realistically, she said it's looking good. The bottom one should be closed up in another couple of weeks (The top ones are almost there already). Yesterday was my first relatively pain-free day I've had. (IE: I didn't have to take ANY drugs! Yay me!)

I've had a really good week so far. Yesterday I actually got up and made it to work early (meeting), but then I stayed LATE! I was on such a roll and had so much to do I figured why not. I had no where else to be, nothing else to do. Turns out Jeff was late getting home too because VDOT is trying to patch all the potholes the snowplows made, therefore backing up traffic on the interstates.

I actually got to eat a sub yesterday! Besides the pizza last Thursday this is really the first hard food I've tried to eat since the surgery. And it was so yummy!! Mmm...lunch.

So here's my South Park version of me. I'm sticking my tongue out at the world saying "Pppttthhhh. You can't stop me!"*

SouthPark (14k image)

*Don't ask me what that was all about

Pet peeve: small talk

Super pet peeve: small talk about the weather. ARG!!!

Anyone else hear it's supposed to be close to 70 tomorrow? That's crazy! It's COLD outside today! (And slightly drizzly) (Is that a word?) (Why am I talking like this?) (I don't know, maybe because you're delirious from lack of food). It's lunchtime! Yay!

**Edit 1:23pm I just realized I talked about the weather after mentioning it was a pet peeve. Wow, I'm really wacky today. It's not so much talking about the weather that bugs me, it's talking about the weather with people you might as well not even talk to if that's the ONLY thing the two of you have to say to each other. See? Oh, and drizzly IS a word.

March 4, 2003Crappy to productive

For a day that started out as bad as it did, it sure did end up productive. I felt horrible when I woke up this morning. I was having a lot of pain yesterday so when I came home I took the "stronger" pain pills. I slept on the couch until I finally dragged myself up the stairs to bed at midnight where I promptly fell back asleep. This morning I was shaky and jittery and just about passed out in the shower.

When I got to work I didn't figure I would stay all day because my brain was so fuzzy. But around 1 all the pills started wearing off (without bringing more pain!) so I was able to accomplish a lot. I got on a roll after lunch and ended up working until 7.

No dancing for me tonight. I decided early this afternoon that I just didn't feel up to jumping around much. Not that we actually jump around, but you know. Nothing else on the agenda for tonight, just going to sit around and relax.

February 27, 2003Teeth Extraction: The Aftermath

5:30 PM and I'm mostly awake and clear. That was one of the oddest experiences in my life. They put me on nitrous oxide when I first got there, to help me relax first. I really didn't think it was working until she got the IV in me. And before they even started the "medicine that would make me forget everything," I started to slip into unconsciousness.

I remember the nurse and/or doctor saying that one of their earlier patients today said it felt like he was back in college (drinking). I laughed and agreed, it sort of did. And then I was out.

At some point I felt a little uncomfortableness (is that a word?) and think I made some wimpering noises. Near the end, when I was starting to come out of it I could hear them talking and hear/feel the machines.

Next thing I know Jeff is walking in. I don't remember putting my coat on, but I vaguely remember walking out to the car because the nurse came with us. And then we were home. After showing Jeff where my insurance card and drivers license were so he could get my prescription filled, I fell asleep.

I only woke up one other time. Jeff wanted me to eat so I could take the medicine, but all I wanted to do (and did do) was go back to sleep. I got up at 4 and had some soup, oyster crackers, the red pill :) and some cheesecake.

My face and tongue are still numb, especially the left side (2 teeth left, 1 right). I just hope the pain pill kicks it because I'm having a little discomfort with the bottom side. I don't think I'm too puffy yet. I've kept ice on it for a while now. No bruising so far either.

-Oh, and for those who want to know, no uncontrollable drooling or projectile vomiting.

February 24, 2003It's time!

Yikes!!

I never thought this would happen quite so soon! Looks like I'm going in Thursday (that's February 27th, 3 days from now!) to get my teeth out.

Might as well do it and get it over with!

February 24, 2003Just another manic Monday

Why is it that the majority of my site's traffic is on a Monday? Do people really not want to face the fact that the weekend is over and they have to go back to work? (Why else would I be writing this now, right?)

So what did everyone do this weekend? I myself did absolutely nothing, and it was lovely. The most productive thing I did was run a few errands on Saturday. We need more weekends like this.

This is like that last 30 minutes of work, when you know anything you start working on will be at least an hour project, so you just fool around until it's time to go. But for me, right now, I still have an hour and a half. But I still can't seem to make myself do any work.

In case I confused anyone, I'm leaving at 2:30 for a meeting with my new oral surgeon. That's right folks, after almost 6 years of talking and complaining about it I'm finally going to get my wisdom teeth out. Yikes! I guess the meeting today is just to prepare for the actual 'event.'

I hope we can get this done as soon as possible because I don't want to wait anymore. It's kinda like getting a major haircut; once you decide to do, you have to do it right away or you'll lose the nerve.

Hmm..guess that's it for now. Go Tony!

February 10, 2003A haircut!

Oh yeh, I got my hair cut on Friday. Yay me!

Posted by Olivia at 5:37 PM | Comments (1)

January 24, 2003Down...no wait, I'm up! And back down again..

I woke up this morning and dragged myself out of bed about 8:20. I was so tired and had no energy. I finally get myself togther and to work (only 15 minutes late). The day is going great, not too much work. One pesky call that I made worse, but finally got that out of the way. My co-worker left at noon so all was quiet.

So very quiet..Friday's are normally pretty slow (or just quiet) days for us, but it sounded like a library in here. I spent about an hour doing nothing but surfing, reading the normal blogs and catching up on CT.

Then comes the lunch dilema.

1. I have no food with me because, obviously, I woke up too late to fix anything.

2. I have no cash.

Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, I have a limited budget so do I:

a. suck it up and get some money?

b. eat popcorn?

Other factors to consider:

I. I'm not really hungry

II. But I'm beginning to develop a headache

III. What am I going to eat?

So ok, 2:15 rolls around and the headache is getting worse. So I suck it up and head for the closest SunTrust. Oh look! They're closed! Big surprise (They're always closed from 2-4) No big deal, I would be using the ATM anyway. Park, get out, walk up the steps.."This machine is currently unavailable, please try another location" or some crap.

Well poo.

And it really wouldn't be such a big deal except:

A. The headache has practically taken over my entire head

B. THE ATM IS ALWAYS BROKEN, WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE FIX THIS CRAP!?!?!?!

Grr..so here I sit, with my popcorn and soda. Baja Fresh better be open until 10.

January 20, 2003I hab a cold..

After fighting for almost a week my body finally gave up and let the cold overtake it. That's right, I'm declaring myself officially sick. Ugh. What started out as just a chest cold has now seeped into my brain, depriving me of many brain functions. Hopefully I won't have too much work to do today so I can leave early. I'm certainly not doing anything worthwhile here.

December 21, 2002Poor poor pitiful me.

I left work early today since I was feeling "ill" as my co-worker said I looked. I came home and slept all afternoon. When Jeff left to meet the guys for the hockey game, I got up and started wrapping Christmas presents. Now I have a stack of festive gifts waiting to be opened.

I was waiting on the guys to call after the game so I could join them..since I'm not leaving until Sunday, I didn't really care how late I stayed up tonight. Alas, it is after 1am and I never received a call.

Not sure what I'm going to do now..maybe just go to bed. I could clean...but I think I'll leave that for tomorrow, along with everything else.

May 30, 2002Itchy & Scratchy

Remember what it felt like when you had chicken pox, and it itched so bad, but your parents said not to scratch it, it would only get worse?

Yeh, that's how I feel right now.

That'll teach me to go out in the outside without sunscreen again. Guess I should have paid more attention to Mr. Lurhmann.

Silly me.

February 1, 2002Ahh, to be a woman.

Sometimes, being a woman just really sucks. On such days, I just want to curl up in my nice warm bed and sleep. I would feel so much better. I know several of you who read this site are male, so here's a little excerpt, as requested, of what goes on in my brain (somewhat "Korte-esque") as I'm doing my work. Keep in mind now that I'm not being lazy, I'm in PAIN!

Searching though reports: "Once I get this done, that's half the paper on my desk I can get rid of."

Printing reports, "Wow, that's a lot"

Hearing printer going: "Shit, now I have to get up and walk to the printer"

Looking around: " Who canI I get to bring me those"

Disappointed: "Nobody. There's nobody here"

Self: "Ok, how am I going to do this? I can't feel my legs."

Self: "Ok legs, move. Arms, you too, push away from the desk. I know you can do it, you do it all the time."

Legs: "No way, I'm not hauling your ass around right now"

Arms: "Are you crazy?"

Abdomen: " Please don't move me. I feel much better when you don't move me."

Realization that I have to get my work done: "There's no realization, that's why I'm sitting here typing this.

Phone rings: "Shit. I can't move to get that."

Rings again: "Maybe someone else will get it"

Rings a third time: "Ok arms, you can move 2 feet to pick up the phone."

Anyone wanna trade bodies for a few days?
