April 3, 2007Baby squirrel
While walking on the nature trail today with a coworker we found a baby squirrel, only a few inches long, that had fallen from a tree when the nest fell apart. He wasn't moving much, but still definitely alive. We made a second circuit on the trail and he hadn't moved by the time we got back. We went back to the office and I called Jeff to get a phone number of a coworker's wife who works with wildlife that need assistance. She agreed to take the baby squirrel until he was big enough to be released back into the wild.
I found a box and a towel and went back out to collect the squirrel. I wasn't really sure if he would try to run, but he was really docile. Went right into the box and curled up under the blanket. He didn't move around too much until right before Tricia showed up and then he tried to climb out the box. When she picked him up he curled up in her hand just like a kitten. She's going to keep him for a few weeks, make sure there are no physical effects from the fall and let him get a little bigger before letting him go.
