June 8, 2005Out of order

CingularAs a former SunCom customer now being assimilated into the Cingular network I have joined the thousands of other customers who's old phones will no longer work on the Cingular network. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a letter telling me to come stand in a long line, I found out when Jeff tried to call me last night.

He said he tried several times and kept getting a message about the number not being correct. And anytime I tried to dial out, I would get a recording about Cingular's Sales Office hours. So I called this morning. Actually, I just tried calling Jeff because I hadn't written down the number, and I spoke to a nice young lady who informed me I would have to get a new phone.

I politely responded with, "but I never got a letter, and I just bought this phone and was not told it wouldn't work in a few months."

To which she replied, "Sorry, we sent out thousands of letters and it's been on the news."

So. There it is. Until further notice I can no longer be reached by cell phone.

June 8, 2005Back in business

Ok, so I went to the Cingular store during lunch. Luckily, I walked in as someone else was leaving so I was helped immediately. People who came in after me weren't so lucky. They were all still waiting when I left.

I had a choice of about 7 phones to replace my now defunct SunCom one. They ranged in price from $20 to $80, but were going to be free. I briefly glanced over the bunch, noticing that most were flip phones (which I'm afraid I'll never find in the depths of my purse), and promptly asked for the same thing I had, just in the 'Cingular' version.

So now I have the same exact phone, 2 ac chargers, 2 manuals, a new coverage plan (which is practically the same at this point), and an account in my name. All for the low, low price of...well, ok, so I didn't have to pay anything, but I did have to take a long lunch to deal with all this crap. Oh well.

At least I'm not one of those customers who were so upset that all Cingular stores now have security guards in them. People are crazy. It's just phone service. Sheesh.

So anywayz, point is, I'm back in business and taking calls! :)

June 11, 2005Pain in the ass?

Well, things aren't exactly back to normal. Turns out the sales guy at the Cingular store must have mistyped my number when switching me over from SunCom. So until the department who handles mistakes like this can fix it, my old phone number is out of service. Fortunately, the only difference is the last 2 numbers, they are now 63.

Since my old number is still attached to my old account, and still available, I should be able to get it back. Hopefully I'll hear something early next week. But until then, use my new number or just call Jeff. :)

June 13, 2005Season for change

I think the rising tempuratures (it's supposed to be 95 degrees tomorrow) have caused some of us to go a little off the deep end.

Thursday I took the afternoon off to get my hair cut and highlighted. Well, instead of getting the usual blonde highlights I came out a redhead! I've always loved red hair, but never thought I could pull off having it. Susan (my 'stylist') convinced me I could, so I went for it! So far I really like it and most other people have said the same. I don't have any pictures right now, but I'll post them when I do.

Not to be outdone by my spontaneous decision, Jeff went out on Saturday and bought himself a motorcycle! It seems 4 wheels just wasn't cutting it. After taking the Motorcycle Safety Training course last weekend, I knew it wouldn't be long until he started thinking about buying one.

I guess I don't need to feel guilty about buying that DVD at Target on Saturday now, do I?

In other, less exciting news, Jeff decided to pass his cold bug to me, so now I'm the one with the drippy sinus' and stuffy head. Hopefully I can kick this thing before the Lewis Family Reunion next weekend in North Carolina. We weren't able to go last year, but at least we got to see some people at the wedding.

Our new neighborhood is coming along nicely. The model and 2 other houses having framing up. This is going to be a really long wait.

June 16, 2005Ahhh, June has arrived!

What is it about June that makes it such a crazy time for a lot of people? Why, out of all the months, June? As I have mentioned in Junes past, it's a mentally (& sometimes physically) exhausting time to work in this office.

Just like an entry I made last year I have left here every night this week just drained. Also like last year, we have much excess in the way of money to spend. Our Purchasing Dept has been working like crazy to place orders with vendors who can guarantee shipment by June 27th. And of course each of those orders gets distributed to one of us in Accounts Payable.

Today was the close of a funding account we get twice a year, ETF. Oh yes, the dreaded ETF. When I arrived this morning I had 3 orders that had been received, but did not have invoices for/invoices were incorrect. After many, many phone calls, I received the final invoice at 4:15. Talk about getting down to the wire!

I wish I could say that's the end of the stress, but I've still got 2 more weeks of following up on orders to ensure we process as many payments as possible before June 29.

I will definitely be ready for a vacation in July!

June 17, 2005I got skeeels

Tile CuttingAfter Wednesday night's trip to da Soufside to lend a hand in the Sos' attic, I can add another skill to my list: tile cutting. Mike decided to use ceramic tile for the top of his desk in the office, so I began laying, measuring and cutting.

I'd never used a tile cutter before, so I was a little apprehensive at first, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. I'm definitely not a master tile cutter like Lauren, but now I know it's not an terribly difficult thing to learn and might actually want to try it for our house one day.

Seeing this project progress and being able to help has really put the bug in me to do cool things with our house. But knowing we'll be moving in a little over a year makes it seem kinda silly to put more money into the townhouse. I guess I should just start making a list of things to do after we move.

June 23, 2005Lewis Family Reunion

Last Friday Jeff (06/17/05) and I shipped the cat off, packed up the car and drove 6.5 hours to Mars Hill, NC for the Lewis Family Reunion. Even though this was the 3rd reunion held in 5 years, the last time we were there was in 2001. My paternal grandfather's family hails from a tiny town north of Asheville called Walnut.

After some slight confusion with the hotel rooms (if you book more than in the same name, and not all parties are arriving at the same time, don't let the hotel mark those additional rooms as checked in.) we crashed around 2am.

Saturday we headed up the mountain to what used to be an old school house. After a fire destroyed most of the building it was rebuilt as a community center. While helping set up for the vow renewals my grandparents were going to be doing later in the day, we chatted with various members of my extended family.

Everytime we have a reunion or an event where a lot of family is present I have to get the whole family tree explained again. I guess I just don't see most of the people enough to remember.

After eating and waiting for the rain to subside my grandparents renewed their vows. This past December they celebrated their 51st anniversary. Afterwards we had a mini-reception complete with cake and punch.

Most people headed out shortly after so the clean up crew got to work. You know what I mean; there's always a group of people that stay to help clean up after any event. Once the 'schoolhouse' was properly cleaned we hung out at one of my great-aunt's home for a while.

My great-grandparent's (both deceased) house is at the top of the mountain. A few years ago, a cousin moved in and began renovating the entire house, barn, and land. It's been really neat to see what he's done with the place. The old barn, once used for drying tobacco which was grown in the fields, has been turned into a horse barn. He works for the State Police and takes care of several horses used by the department.

Later on we had dinner with my parents then went back to the hotel. Sunday morning all the immediate family (parents, brother, grandparents, aunt, cousin) met at the local Huddle House for breakfast before getting on the road.

Jeff and I headed north, Bruce & his girlfriend west, and the rest went south. My parents spent a few days in Kingstree visting with my grandparents before going back to Arkansas. If the timing hadn't been so bad (work) it would have been nice to go with them. At least we got to visit for the weekend.

It's nice having these reunions; I have so many family members I don't know, sometimes is hard to believe we're all related.
