Siding: Tan - That's the techincal name, but it's a little lighter than what I consider tan. Sometime in the next week or so well make an appointment with Richmond Decorating to pick out carpet & linoleum. I guess those are the only two things left. On Saturday, when Jeff's parents were in town, we took them to see our dirt and found a nice surprise waiting for us. Curbing! It hasn't made it all the way down our street yet, but they've got it started. And there are markers for the driveways. Pretty neat to have a better idea where our house will be. Wednesday afternoon the Gallery, our large meeting room on campus, was converted into a bright and busy mini-casino. Thanks to Massino's Cassino we were treated to tables for blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em, craps, & roulette. The theme, Viva Las Reynolds, was an effort to make the annual Awards & Recognition Ceremony more exciting and increase attendance. All of the campuses closed early to allow all employees to attend. While some skipped out, there was still a pretty good turnout. Vouchers were distributed with the programs, which could be redeemed for chips at any of the various games. After about an hour we had to cash in and receive tickets based on the amount of chips we had left. The tickets went into a bucket for door prize drawings later. I tried to play a couple hands of Texas Hold 'Em, but was quickly frustrated by the other players not knowing how to play, and the dealers, not dealing correctly. You'd think a company that provides casino service like this would train their employees properly, but I was very disappointed with the poker folks. So I switched to roulette for a while. Won some, lost some. Ended up slightly down from where I started, but that's typical for me. :) After the tables were closed down, some special awards were given out. One of the guys who works in Security did a mini concert with Sinatra-style songs. Ticket drawings rounded out the evening, but unfortunately, I walked out empty handed. Even though this program was scheduled past the normal working hour, most people stayed until the end. I had a pretty good time, and it's always neat to be able to put faces with the voices I talk to on the phone all the time. Yesterday morning Gizmo & I made our semi-annual pilgrimage to the vet to get updated on all the vaccines he needed. Somehow over the years his schedule had gotten off and only the rabies shot was due this month. Fortunately, the doctor said we could go ahead and do them all, to keep him from coming back in another few months. I'm not sure if they decided that to be benefit Gizmo, or them! Needless to say, Gizmo becomes very disagreeable when visiting the vet. Between the assistant and I we were able to hold him down (with a towel over him) long enough for the doctor to actually examine him and give him 3 shots. I suffered the only injury when, stupidly, I moved my hand in front to keep him from jumping off the table. Man those teeth are sharp! Poor kitty was so stressed during the morning activities that he laid on the chair and slept all evening. Even this morning he wasn't his usual bouncy self. Hopefully none of the shots are affecting him adversely, and that he's just a little sore from having 3 shots in the rear. Since I'm the only one who's ever taken him to the vet, I wonder if that's part of the reason he likes Jeff more than me. Hmm. Too bad I can't explain to him that it's for his own good! Late Friday night Jeff surprised me with tickets to Saturday's Chevy American Revolution 400, the Nextel Cup race at RIR! The kind folks over at UPS had given the Martin UPS team tickets, and someone didn't want to go. So Jeff snatched them up. We reached the track and found our seats with about an hour to go, but because of impending weather, they started all the prerace activities a little sooner than scheduled. Luckily though, the weather held off and it turned out to be a beautiful night. Seating in the second level gave us a better view of the entire track than we'd previously had. It also meant we had to watch out for drunk people falling down the stairs. Overall the race wasn't too terribly exciting; Kasey Kahne & Tony Stewart dominated the majority of the laps, with Kahne just beating out Stewart at the end. After watching him (Kahne) come in second so many times, it was really cool to be there for his first Nextel Cup victory. As I was leaving Ukrops today with my daily intake of lettuce and tomatoes I overheard another shopper mention that she'd learned to always park her car in the same row, so she never had to worry about losing it. That got me thinking, I do the same thing. Maybe not because I'm afraid of losing it, but because it's a habit I've formed. Why is it that we tend to do things the same way over and over. From where you park your car, to the lane you tend to drive in, to the routine you have for getting ready in the morning, I would guess most people seldom stray from a pattern of behavior they've adopted. Are we simply creatures of habit who find comfort in routines or is it laziness and lack of initiative to try new things? Or is it something else entirely?
