January 2, 2004Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!
Happy New Year!!

As the majority of you know, Mike & Lauren hosted this year's party. They, or should I say, Lauren (sorry Mike!) did an awesome job with the decorations, noisemakers, and food.

Before the party got started, those who chose to participate in our Secret Santa swap exchanged gifts. It was neat seeing what everyone chose to buy and who ended up as whose Secret Santa. With so many of us, I think this is definitely the way to go. And thanks to my Secret Santa for all the wonderful gifts! ;)

After the rest of the crew arrived, we dove into all the delicious food. Lauren those tomatoes rocked! Later Brian, Chris & Paul entertained us with a performance by Legitimate Beef. Is that your official name yet guys? Crowd participation & of course, Dick Clark, helped rock in the new year.

We had a great time, too bad we have to wait a whole year for it to happen again. :(

January 4, 2004Last days of freedom

The last few days of the holiday have flown by way too fast. And I wasn't able to accomplish everything I'd hoped, but at least January's not booked solid so there will be time for the rest. I did get the mountain of laundry finished up, the Christmas gifts put in their proper places, and some light cleaning done.

Friday night Chris picked me up and we headed for Goochland to meet up with the rest of the crew. Brian, Paul & Jeff had spent the afternoon helping Eric start finishing the attic space. Some fine dining at Rocco's left us all a little sleepy. Before long Brian passed out and the rest of us headed home.

Saturday Kelly H and I met up with Kelly B, Lauren and Jess for a girls afternoon out. (The boys were playing football). A quick lunch at Subway and a stop by the "refreshment stand" held us through Mona Lisa Smile. The movie wasn't too bad; a little shallow. It could have been so much more, but I didn't feel the story line or the characters were developed very well. But no matter, we enjoyed it anyway.

After the movie we wandered around Stoney Fashion Park while waiting for the guys to come up with a plan. And of course we had to have some ice cream! More eating ensued a few hours later when us Westenders (Southsiders bailed) enjoyed the fine food at Moe's. Not quite as good as Baja Fresh, but I suppose it will have to do.

We ended up at Brian's for the remainder of the evening watching (or sleeping through!) Indiana Jones. Only 1 more day to go!!

January 13, 2004Getting settled back in

Work has been pretty busy since we returned. It's always so hard getting back into the swing of things after a 2 week vacation. Having Convocation (college-wide staff meeting) last Monday helped a little. That meant we only had to really work 4 days.

I've been kicking ass this week getting stuff done. A lot of older invoices that had issues have finally been resolved. It's a nice feeling. :) Of course, by the end of this week I'll have a massive pile of filing to do...oh well.

January 13, 2004Paving crew shows up

We got a letter a couple of weeks ago from our Association letting us know the paving crews would be here this week to put down the final layer of asphault. This is the second time they've sent a letter, so it wasn't until someone knocked on our door yesterday at 9am that it was official. We hadn't moved our cars (by 8am per the letter) so they wanted to make sure we were going to get out of there so we wouldn't get towed.

So off to work we went. And then we came home. Nothing had been done. Nothing.
But Jeff said when he left this morning there was actually paving equipment & machinery in the neighborhood. So hopefully our half of the street will be done when we get home! Yay!

January 14, 2004Asphault is messy

Sure enough, our half of the street is paved!! Hopefully by the end of today the rest of the neighborhood will be too. It's so nice.... Too bad I keep tripping up, thinking there's another step up from the ground to the sidewalk. Whoops! That will pass I suppose.

The name of this item leads us to believe it's from another country. But in reality it's origin is German. What is the word/item in question?

January 21, 2004The curse of the videogame

What is it about videogames that's so addicting? What makes us stay up until all hours of the night playing these silly little games? For yet another night Jeff and I stayed up waaay too late playing ATV. But I was able to beat his high score (on one track) and then beat my own score! Yay me!!

However, I am a little tired today. :(

January 21, 2004Hard to shower

After oversleeping once again (see previous entry), we awake to find extremely low water pressure in the house. Still haven't figured out why. And of course none of our neighbors were around to ask if they were having the same problem.

And the water heater was making an awful lot of noise when filling back up after we'd had our showers (or so I thought). It sounded like popcorn. I don't remember it ever being so loud, but it could just be because I was on high alert for anything else unusual going on.

Any ideas?

January 21, 2004Lost files

So just when I think nothing else could go wrong (I was late to work btw, see previous entry), I find out some of our files on one of the servers are missing. Random files and folders. Not everything mind you, just some stuff. Luckily our IT Dept is going to be able to restore our whole folder from last night's backup. But that is just weird. I can't figure out what happened. Oy.

*Update* 10:39am
Found out that the files had just been moved into someone else's folder. Still not sure how, but at least we have all our stuff back.

January 23, 2004Tech support, how can I help you?

I'm so tired of being the "computer guru" in the office. Everyone comes to me with problems. Usually it's not a big deal, I don't mind helping, but man, when will people learn stuff for themselves?

A big thank you goes out to all those tech support people who deal with this everyday!

An extra special thanks to Jeff for putting up with all my questions!

January 25, 2004Checkers

Crazy boys playing checkers at Cracker Barrel in the freezing temperatures.

Too cold!
After stuffing ourselves silly, Brian & Chris hung out at our place battling it out in a round of The 80s Game. A change in the rules halfway through had Brian & Chris reversing their direction. This not only extended the game, but gave Jeff and I chance to get to the end. While Jeff did end up winning, I was still stuck in the mid-80s. :( Maybe one time I'll be able to keep up. Either way, it was a lot of fun.

January 26, 2004Ci Ci's in the snow

speed shovelerMonday Jeff and I met up with the boys for a little Ci Ci's action. But first we had to get out of the house. Jeff is a speed demon when it comes to shoveling snow. He had the sidealk cleared in no time!!

After lunch we chilled out at Brian's watching tv and playing video games. That's what we seem to do best lately.

Someone (not going to name names ;) ) had the brilliant idea do to split screen video gaming; one side Playstation, the other Nintendo. Pretty cool. It also works well to play games on one and just watch tv on the other. That would be the reason to buy a widescreen tv!

I can't think of anything else productive we may have done...it was a snow day, we weren't supposed to be productive!

January 27, 2004Snow Day #2

So I had another snow day Tuesday. Not really sure why. I went out to run some errands and the roads seemed clear enough. I guess with us having 3 campuses, they had to make sure all were drivable. Oh well, I'm not going to complain!

January 29, 2004A near hit

So I'm leaving home this morning, driving down Hunton Park Blvd, coming up on the entrance to the apartments. I see this big Yukon coming out of the apartment complex. And he's still coming, and coming. Knowing I probably wouldn't be able to stop either, I swerved left and he came sliding out into the intersection. That was almost scary.

January 30, 2004Stupid driver alert

So I'm driving east on Parham yesterday and stop at the intersection with Brook Rd (Rt 1) The left turning traffic heading north on Brook Rd start to go and this truck with a snowplow on front does a u-turn.

As soon as that left turning traffic stopped, an unmarked police car whips out of our left turn lane and pulls over the truck.

Moral: If it says no u-turn, don't do a u-turn. Especially when it's a busy intersection. But if you absolutely have to, make sure there are no unmarked police cars nearby.
