November 5, 2003Too busy to blog

Wow, I guess not having an entry up here tells you something. Work has been crazy lately, no time at all for blogging. Maybe later tonight I can get something else up here.

 Halloween 2003

Charlie's Angels?
I slipped out of work a little early on Friday to get ready for Eric & Kelly's Halloween party. Too bad we still ended up leaving late. Oh well, we made it there fashionably late. And fashionable we were. :)
Tink, the body builder
I decided to dress up as Tinkerbell this year. I bought a pre-made costume that ended up (as most are) being fairly cheesey. But I didn't have time (or a sewing machine) to alter it any. But that's ok, I think it worked out fine. Jeff decided not to dress up, he just played with parts from everyone else's costumes.

Kelly & Eric really out did themselves with the decorations and food. From the fog machine on the front porch to the spiders in the punch, there was no detail overlooked. Awesome job guys!!

Jeff and I hung out with Osama (Paul), Paul Teutul Sr. (Brian), Neo (Eric), and the Wicked Queen (Kelly) as well as other witches, pimps, farmers and other fun characters. Thanks guys for the good food, music and company! And sorry about all the glitter!

Here are Paul's pictures (I forgot my camera).

November 7, 2003Kelly & Jon's Wedding

The Bultemas.jpg
The wedding was held in a little church on the southside, near their new house I believe. After an unexpected visit from Jeff's parents, we rushed down there slipping in just before the bridesmaids were to walk down the aisle. Whew!

The ceremony itself was simple and short. The best kind, in my opinion. Once again I found myself tearing up. Why do people cry at weddings? It's supposed to be a happy event! Why do people cry when they're happy?!

We (Jeff, Brian, Paul & I) hung around for a while after the ceremony watching them take pictures before heading to Birkdale for the reception. The reception was held at the Country Club right around the lake from Mike & Lauren's house. After the wedding party finally arrived, the buffet was opened. We feasted on veggies, fruit, cheese, yummy pasta salad, and rolls (along with some other things I chose not to eat). After a while dancing got underway followed shortly by karaoke for those brave souls out there.

The karaoke was a big hit. Several people got up to sing, some more than once. There was a brief intermission for the bouquet & garter toss then the toasting & cake cutting. Lauren gave a great slide presentation containing pictures of Jon & Kelly growing up. Very cool idea.
Karaoke Girls
More dancing (and of course cake eating) ensued. Eventually the newly weds decided to hit the road. We sent them off in a shower of sparklers (and don't forget the smoke!) As they made their way back to the city to The Jefferson, the rest of us helped load cars with gifts, decorations and leftover food.

The young crowd headed to the Sostes place for a little after-wedding partying. Jon & Kelly, we partied in true Richmond Geeks style just for you! As the night went on we kept losing people. Finally Jeff and I decided to call it a night and made the long trek back home.

Congratulations Jon & Kelly! So when's the move-in/house warming party?

November 10, 2003The furniture fiasco

Jeff & I placed the order for our new sofa, chair & ottoman on July 2. The estimated date was 8-12 weeks. Ok, that's a little long, but it's not a color (black) they (The Room Store) keep in stock, so it had to be special ordered. And it's coming from Italy (microfiber, not leather).

So 8 weeks goes by. 9 weeks. 10...11...12. 13 weeks. This is when I started calling. All they could tell me was mid-October. The next time I called, late October. Well, it's now been 18 weeks, it's getting to be mid-November and we still have no sofa!!

Saturday we swung by the store before dinner to see what the deal was. We spoke to a very nice lady who helped us, but only slightly. She informed us that this furniture was very backordered (duh!), but they had a dock-date of November 10. At first I thought this was a good thing. But the dock-date means the day it's scheduled to leave Italy, not arrive here. Doh!

But she was very insistent that it could definitely be here within a week. (Uh huh). Jeff's going to call the manager and see if they can't 'help' us out a little since we've had to wait so incredibly long for this stuff. Grr..

November 14, 2003Get the tissues ready

For the second time this week I left work early to go home and rest. Wednesday I could tell I was getting sick. I worked until the headache overtook me. Same with yesterday. I stayed long enough to suffer through our 3pm staff meeting, and then left at 4:30.

Why oh why must I always get a cold? Every single year. This is soooo annoying.

I feel better today after taking some medicine last night, but it's starting to wear off. The headache is looming and the sniffles have already started. A few more hours and I may be ready to go home.

November 19, 2003Bored?

Umm...uhhh...now what?

This is the first time in a couple weeks that I haven't had anything pressing to do. Even yesterday was busy. What happened? And now what do I do?

This is weird.

November 21, 2003A place to sit!

As I was leaving work last night I noticed I had a voicemail. A little unusual since anyone I know that would leave a message would know I was at work and contact me there. So I listen to the message. "Hi, this is the Room Store. I'm trying to contact Jeff Pollard. Please give us a call ..."

Hmm..interesting. So I relay the message to Jeff who (I assume) immediately calls. Turns out, our furniture will be delivered to Richmond next Wednesday. And even though they normally don't have Wednesday in-store pickup, because of Thanksgiving, they're giving us a brief window of opportunity to come in. Fascinating!

If you recall, Jeff and I had stopped by the store on the 8th to find out what the deal was. They believed our order to be in the shipment with a dock date (day it left Italy) of the 10th. The lady we spoke with thought it would arrive in Richmond on the 17th. On the 19th I called and got the standard, it's still on backorder response.

After I explained the whole situation, the lady put me on hold for a while. When she came back she said that whoever we talked to on the 8th was incorrect. There have been so many oders for this furniture that there were 25 ahead of us. And those were the people receiving the dock-date-of-the-10th order.

But she assured me that we were 1st on the list for the next shipment which had a dock date of the 17th. Of course with the holiday and all we were looking at a first week of December arrival date.

Ok, so now they're telling us our stuff will be here on Wednesday?
Now that I've caught you all back up in the drama that is our life, who thinks we'll actually be getting our furniture on Wednesday?

November 26, 2003Minor Sofa Surgery

Sofa Surgery
Jeff and I met at The Room Store around 2:30 on Wednesday. We loaded up his truck at their ghetto delivery door and slowly made our way home. After unwrapping and getting it all in the door, we had to figure out how to get the legs on. We only had a slight problem with that. Well, with one leg. Some material got caught up in the threads of the screw and we couldn't get it in or out. To make a long story short, we ended up taking off some of the bottom fabric and found the metal thing attached to the frame that the screw went into had come loose. With no way to unscrew the bolt, we had to cut it off.

As Jeff said, we can't have a couch without a gimpy leg. Once the original bolt was cut, he found another to use and proceeded to bolt the final leg on. A little vacuuming and we were set!

November 27, 2003Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday we headed out early for Bridgewater to spend the day with Jeff's family. Shortly after arriving, we piled the food into the car and went to his grandparents house where Jennifer had already arrived. We got the food all ready then dug in. Mmmm...green beans...

As we began cleaning up I started feeling..not so good. I had the chills and my body was aching. By the time we finished, I was pretty cold and had begun to cough.

Jennifer had to leave right after we ate since she had to work. The rest of us hung out an visited for a while before heading back to the Pollards house. I fell asleep while everyone else watched Road to Perdition.

Friday Jeff had an appointment to get the exhaust on his truck worked on. After he returned we, along with Mrs P, headed out to the book fair. A quick stroll around and a visit with Mr P then we went to Costco.

By about 5:30 we were on the road for home. Later that night we both decided it would be nice to have a Frosty, so out we went. On our way back into the house we heard a loud meow. A kitten darted out from under our neighbors car. I immediately tried calling to get her to come over. But she was so skiddish, she wouldn't come close enough to touch.

We decided to go on inside and hope she would head for her own house. But as I watched from the window, she had followed us to the door and was running around near the house. I told Jeff I would give her 20 minutes, then I was going to bring her in. It was a really cold night and it was obvious she was a house cat.
Lost Kitten
20 minutes later she was still outside, hanging out in the mulch. She still wouldn't come up to me, so I grabbed an almost empty can of cat food. It didn't take too much coaxing before she gobbled that up. I was actually able to pick her up twice, but both times she jumped out of my arms before I could get inside.

So we grabbed Gizmo's carrier. I used more food to get her inside. Once the door was closed though, wow, did she move! Meowing and jumping all over the place. We put her in the bathroom upstairs and let her calm down some. By the time we went to bed she was letting me pet her with no problem.

November 29, 2003Searching for parents

First off, happy birthday to my brother! He turns the big 2-1 today!
Lost Kitten
Saturday we printed out some pictures of the kitten and started making the rounds to nearby houses. There weren't very many people home so we were getting very discouraged. We took a break to eat and wait for more people to show up. The last house we visited was a jackpot. The couple said that one of their neighbors had rescued some kittens during the hurricane and it could be one of his. So we waited, and waited, and waited for this guy to show up. Eventually I just put a note on his door and asked him to come see us.

The rest of the day I lounged around feeling pretty miserable. The cough was heading towards chest congestion. I was even running a low fever on and off.
