August 1, 2003Cable box gets the boot

Ever since Monday night when we had a sudden storm and the power went out for 5 minutes, our cable box has been acting up. Or rather it hasn't been acting at all. We're able to change the channel, all of which are still coming in, but none of the menu/guide features worked.

After 3 phone calls, 3 different people and 3 different answers, we were finally told just to bring it in and ComCast would replace it. Sheesh. So Jeff stopped by on his way to work this morning to exchange the defunct box. Hopefully this one will work the way it's supposed to.

Ok, that was weird. As I was typing that last sentence, my browser suddenly took me to another page. That's wack.

So anywayz, guess I'll be testing out the new box later.

That's all.

:)

I just smushed the biggest spider I have even seen in a house. Holy geez. Gizmo was messing behind the chair (by the tree) so I went to see what he was doing. And what do I find? A massive spider trying to hide under the chair. AGH!!!

August 3, 2003When the boys are away...

the girls will clean!

Well, at least this girl did. I had a fairly productive day, too bad it's now waaay over. It's amazing what can be done when you multitask:

Wash, fold and put away 4 loads of clothes
Vacuum entire house
Dust entire house
Clean bathrooms
Clean kitchen
Empty dishwasher
Take stuff to Salvation Army drop off (6 bags of clothes, 2 complete bed linen sets, 1 box of various things and 1 set of tv trays, sheesh!)
Run other errands: Linens N Things, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, Target, bank (And no, I didn't buy things at ALL those stores!)
Hang curtains
Take recycling

And of course there's that general cleaning up that always needs doing. Will it ever end??

I suppose now it's time to go to sleep...nah!

August 4, 2003Candles galore

Yesterday afternoon I went to Goochland for a candle party that Kelly H had. I'd never been to one before. It works just like Tupperware, Mary Kay and Pampered Chef.

We ate some yummy food while Peggy, the Party Lite Consultant showed us a sampling of their many products. She had a lot of cute holiday (Christmas and Halloween) items. I ended up getting a candle that looks like a big snowball and smells like peppermint. I love peppermint. :)

The guys returned from their adventures while we were still partying. Jeff and Mike headed south to the Sos' so Lauren and I joined them there. Wow. Mike's room just glows! Unbelievable! The master bath, though much more subdued, is very impressive. Makes me want to paint some more rooms!

Jeff finally got to eat some beloved Uno's food (which we ALL love) and then we headed for home. The boys had had a long, tiring weekend and Jeff was ready for bed. Aww..so sad. ;)

Did anyone hear the rain last night? I'm surprised I didn't, considering I didn't get to sleep until 3am.

Jeff and I started discussing wedding stuff (and no, I don't have anything to share just yet!) so by the time we went to bed my mind was just racing with all the stuff there's going to be to do. We got in bed at 12:30, and I know I didn't get to sleep before 3. Ugh.

August 6, 2003A little downtime

Well, as I'm sure (or I hope) many of you noticed my site was down today.
All day. Oddly enough, it was because I forgot to pay my bill!

My domain registration had expired, but I didn't receive notices because
buydomains still had my old email address. Whoops! So as soon as Jeff
figured it out for me (thanks!!) I immediately went and renewed. And now
it's marked on my calendar for 2005 that I have to renew again.

When you pay bills and file stuff all day at work, you just don't feel like
doing it at home. Ya know?

August 7, 2003Low tide

I know I mentioned the other day that work had been really boring, but this is
getting ridiculous. People seem to buy things in waves. And this must be low
tide.

I've been able to clean up a lot of problem accounts that had been sitting
around for a while. And what I couldn't do is because I'm waiting on
responses from other people. There're still several high priorty items, but
if the people I need to talk to aren't in, what can I do?

I can't think of the last time I've felt so caught up! I have very few
'pending' items too which is really nice; less I have to follow up with.

Weird.

August 11, 20032 shows down, 1 to go

While most of our friends were running in the Innsbrook 5k Run & Walk on Saturday, Jeff and I were taking pictures, tallying the votes and dodging raindrops in Staunton. Show-N-Shine event #2, Summer Nationals, was held this weekend rain or shine.

Saturday was a mostly overcast day with some afternoon showers turning into heavier rain that evening. Despite the rain there was still a pretty good turnout. Enough to keep Jeff and I busy most of the afternoon tallying the scores. The good thing about this show (and Myrtle Beach) is that there is no judging on Sunday. That leaves time to finish the scoring, break any ties, and double check the info. Much, much less stressful than Summer Slam!

We wrapped it up Saturday night about 8:30. It had started raining pretty hard and most of the show participants left, so we did too, in search of food. AFter some yummy Subway we hung out a little while longer then headed back to the Pollards house. Jeff had to set up their new EMac so I read the night away.

Sunday was fairly uneventful. There was no scoring to do so we just hung out looking at vehicles and talking to people. After awards there was the usual barrage of questions and complaints about the winners. Thankfully there were no mistakes (so far) with the tallying. I hope Myrtle Beach goes as smoothly.

Lunch/Supper in Charlottesville was our only stop on the way home and we arrived in Richmond around 7. Both exhausted we went to bed at 11. That's practically unheard of! Too little sleep, too much sun I guess.

Craziness!Today's big issue: printing

Agh!! What is the deal? Why do I get asked to fix everything?? That's what we have a Help Desk for, hello people!!! Oh well.

So yeh, I ended up having to set up 2 machines to print to the network printer, easy enough, but of course one of them didn't work. It would print from certain programs, but not others. Weird error messages.

So I called the help desk and after 30 minutes had pretty much figured out it was an access/user permissions issue. So we had to set up a new generic user for a communal machine, so everyone can print.

Sheesh...And of course all this was mixed in with the usual morning rush of work that had to be done by noon.

Is it nap time yet?

Here's a picture from VCE's site..I got it in red though. I know it doesn't look like much, but compared to what I had it's pretty nice. I didn't get arms because my desk is split level and they would have just gotten in the way.

August 17, 2003A day off-road

Jeff & me
Despite getting less than 5 hours of sleep Friday night (bed at 1:30, awake at 4:30 by the storm), I decided to get up at 6 with Jeff to drive to Bridgewater to go off-roading. We arrived at 9:30 and waited for Jimmy, Kristy and Ted.

They finally showed up and off we went in search of rocky trails and muddy water. I don't know the specifics regarding where we were, I just know it was very bumpy. Kristy warned me, but I guess I didn't believe her.

It took a while but we eventually found some good trails with challenging parts. We crossed a lot of streams (low parts, much less than a foot deep, don't worry) and made our way over rocks and logs.
In the river

We stopped for lunch then pressed on, running into a group with Land Cruisers along the way. Everyone showed off their ability (or inability) to climb a steep, but short hill.

When Jeff took a turn I held the camera on top of the roof as we went. Unbeknowst to me there were some major branches near the top. First casualty of the day: a very scraped up arm. Doh.

We pressed on, running into rain shortly. As we made our way down a trail we ran into 3 Land Rovers coming towards us. Unfortunately, the trail was very narrow; on one side was the side of the mountain, the other, the edge. We were on the mountain side. The Land Rovers decided not to move over as far as they could have, so we had to squeeze by.

With Jimmy in the lead he started out by putting his passenger side tires up on the side of the bank. A little too high; as his rear tire came off the ground we gasped, sure that he was about to roll it. Thankfully though it didn't and they passed without incident.
Weee

Jeff and I were next and despite motioning repeatedly for the Land Rover to move over, they stayed put. So we took our chances and made it by.

As we all sat waiting for Ted we realized that nobody behind us was moving. After several minutes Jimmy jumped out in the pouring rain to check it out. Come to find out Ted took the same line that Jimmy and Jeff had, but the rear of his truck slide down the bank right into the Land Rover. He ended up with a dent above his taillight and the Land Rover had a dent in its door.

Fortunately, this was the only incident all day. So we continued on until almost 8 when we decided to call it a day and grab some food. Overall it was a fun day. I felt completely rattled by the end of the day but it was something different to do.

August 18, 2003Close Encounters

Well, after making it through the obstacle course that is Friars Walk Lane, I got stuck behind some sort of forklift type machine out on Hunton Park Blvd. The guy driving was kinda weaving in the middle on the two-lane road so I stayed put. But then, as many of these people do, he pulled to the side and stopped. I thought "oh great! He's letting me pass!" So I sped up to go around him.

Less than a car length away I notice the arms of the forklift starting to swing my way and the front tires turning. "Oh shit!" I stepped on the gas and zoomed by.

As I looked back in my rearview mirror, I could see he had completely stopped and was looking ahead at me. I'm guessing he didn't even realize I was there and was a little freaked out having this car shoot by him. Had my car been any taller I just might have run into the forks. Yikes.

And as if that wasn't enough I get stuck behind a pickup on Staples Mill going under the speed limit who was riding just close enough to the dump truck in the other lane to make it impossible to pass. And then on Parham, same situation, different vehicles. Unfortunately, one of them was a really foul smelling garbage truck.

And then, on my way back from the bank, some girl was on her cell phone and almost made us miss the almost-shortest-left turn light in Richmond. That really pissed me off.

Then I hit a fairly big pothole.

And because of massive overgrown vines on a telephone pole I had to pull halfway out into the road to see if there was any traffic. Well, there was. Quick reverse back into hiding.

I think I've about had it for today. And it's only 12:30.

August 18, 2003Invasion of the worm?

So here I am about 5 minutes to 1pm, tryin got tie up all the loose ends, and let my fellow IMers know where I'm headed when all of a sudden...BAM! My computer restarts. Oh lordy.

I take a moment to ponder...Could I have possible hit any errant keys (which I'm famous for) while typing in the IM window? No, I was watching the words as they appeared on the screen, so I KNOW I was typing."

Could the nasty MSBLast worm have gotten to me? Possibly. But why now? With all the hours I had been doing stuff this morning, why now?

So I call the helpdesk.
Me: Troy, my computer just restarted
Troy: We just had 4 other people say the same thing"
Me: Oh great."
Troy: Do you have the latest VirusScan installed
Me: Yup
Troy: Well, start that scanning while we're at Convocation and we'll check it out later.
Me: Ok

I try to "start" the virus scan, thinking it's going to actually DO something. But I think he just wanted me to make sure I let the computer restart completely so it could do it's automatic scan thingy. I dunno, but it didn't find anything.

So we head off to Convocation.

I hope it's not a virus or anything else. I didn find out that several other people had the same problem at the exact same time. Very strange.

August 18, 2003Fall Convocation

Convocation was a time for us all to gather together and sing kumbaya. Oh wait, no. That's camping. :)

What really happened is that Dr Rhodes (College President) spoke first. He went over the college goals and how they're insync or not insync with the Chancellors plan. It was a lot of confusing stuff that kinda went over my head.

The next speaker was Belle Wheelan, Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She was a fabulous speaker. Kept us all entertained yet really got her message out. She talked about how we as faculty and administration have to put a solid front out to the students and public. And reminded us that we are here to educat students; that is our goal.

Anyways, she made the whole thing very enjoyable. Of course it helped that the speaker part ended early. :) A reception was to be held afterwards. My original plan of going straight home was dashed when we all got bored about 3:30 and ended up coming back to work. Doh.

August 25, 2003Bash at the Beach

What an absolutely exhausting weekend. In fact, if we could have, we would have stayed in Myrtle Beach today just to rest up. I know most of you are thinking that we went to be beach, how tiring could that be? Not so my friends. In fact, we didn't even see the beach.

Jeff and I headed down Thursday night, leaving Richmond around 8. A stop in NC for some yummy Sonic put us to the beach about 1:30. We had originally thought that by getting there Thursday night we would have Friday to do whatever we wanted. But both of us forgot the usual 11am meeting at Hooters and that registration and judging started Friday. So there went my plans for a relaxing day on the beach.

So yeh, we had lunch and proceded to 'set up camp.' We stuffed goodie bags in preparation for the onslaught of vehicles to come. About 3pm (the scheduled time) cars started rolling in. We stuck around for a while then left to grab some dinner. We tried out the strombolis at Benitos at Broadway on the Beach. A not so quick cruise down the Boulevard took an hour or more. By then we were both ready for bed.

Saturday came too quickly although we did oversleep quite a bit (whoops!). I guess we finally made it to the mall about 10. I jumped right in helping with registration while Jeff took some pictures (coming soon). I wrote so much my arm is sore. With so few staff members we took lunch in shifts. Jeff and I left around 2, ate, and then headed to start entering participant and scoring information.

We worked for 5 solid hours before stopping. Neon competition started at 8 so back to the mall we went. About 9:30 we (me, Jeff, Mark, Julia and Olivia) headed out to Nascar cafe to meet Marcus for dinner. What a cool place. We got to watch the Bristol Race whil we ate.

Despite the late hour and the fact that we had more scores to enter we had to go cruise again. It's Myrtle Beach people! After and hour and a half we had only just reached the Pavilion so we bailed and headed back. It was at least 12:30 by then. Jeff and I entered info until close to 2 and then crashed.

Another early morning put us in a meeting at 9 to break ties and figure out all the winners. With awards to start at 1, it came down to the wire getting everything together. More writing ensued, and now my arm is really sore! And of course it started to rain. But most people hung around.

After awards were the usual barrage of questions and complaints. Some people are just never happy. We got everything packed up then hit the road about 4pm in search of food. (We hadn't eaten at all yet).

The closet thing to us was a mexican restaurant, Garcias, that my family used to eat at, so we decided to go there. The place looked exactly the same. Exactly. Despite the poor service, our meal was pretty good. By 5 we were leaving Myrtle Beach without ever going to the beach. :(

I drove the first half, until we stopped at Sonic. (FYI, there is a Sonic in Dunn, NC, ext 73) traffic wasn't too bad on 95; at least we were moving. We made it home about 11, which is prety good for us and out of town trips. And even though we went straight to bed, I wish I had today off to relax.

But overall it was a good trip and a good show. And just think, we get to do it all again in a year!

August 26, 2003Title & Registration, please

No, no, I didn't get pulled over for speeding or reckless driving. I'm down to the last week to get my car titled and registered in Virginia. Since it's purchase in 98 it's been registered in Arkansas. Now that it's official paid off and my parents "sold" it to me, I have to get all that crap moved over to Virginia. And what a pain in my ass.

The form DMV requires for titling a vehicle here asks all these questions I just don't know the answer to. I was going to try to get everything filled out so I could just walk in and be ready, but uh uh, that ain't going to happen.

So now that I've procrastinated, I have to go in tomorrow. But first I have to find my social security card. If you were a social security card, where would you be?

August 27, 2003Registered & dangerous

Ok, so I'm not really dangerous. But after an hour and a half in the DMV I am a bit restless. The place was pretty much full when I got there, but with the numbering system it's not a bad wait. At least they have places to sit now.

Turns out I only had to fill out part of one of the forms I had found online. The whole process was much simpler than I expected. The only hangup was over whether the car was given to me or if I paid for it. When it was determined there would be $30 some dollars in taxes if I bought it, I quickly decided it was definitely a gift. ;)

I was also going to get the plates that have "I'm animal friendly" on them, but at #54.50/per year I opted for the plain old boring ones. Maybe next year when I'm rich.

So my next task is inspection. Ugh.
