August 18, 2003Invasion of the worm?

So here I am about 5 minutes to 1pm, tryin got tie up all the loose ends, and let my fellow IMers know where I'm headed when all of a sudden...BAM! My computer restarts. Oh lordy.

I take a moment to ponder...Could I have possible hit any errant keys (which I'm famous for) while typing in the IM window? No, I was watching the words as they appeared on the screen, so I KNOW I was typing."

Could the nasty MSBLast worm have gotten to me? Possibly. But why now? With all the hours I had been doing stuff this morning, why now?

So I call the helpdesk.
Me: Troy, my computer just restarted
Troy: We just had 4 other people say the same thing"
Me: Oh great."
Troy: Do you have the latest VirusScan installed
Me: Yup
Troy: Well, start that scanning while we're at Convocation and we'll check it out later.
Me: Ok

I try to "start" the virus scan, thinking it's going to actually DO something. But I think he just wanted me to make sure I let the computer restart completely so it could do it's automatic scan thingy. I dunno, but it didn't find anything.

So we head off to Convocation.

I hope it's not a virus or anything else. I didn find out that several other people had the same problem at the exact same time. Very strange.

Strange. A site-wide choke of the network could be enough to make Windows freak out a bit.

Just a thought.

I don't really understand what you mean, but here's the message we got this evening from our IT guys:

There is a new virus out that is attacking Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines. It is called W32/nachi.worm. In addition to infecting a machine, it generates high traffic on a network. We need for all those users running Windows 2000 or Windows XP to shutdown their machines until a technician determines it is safe to turn it back on. There are some patches that need to be applied from Microsoft and a new antivirus update that just came out today (SDAT4286). If you are running Windows 98, you are not affected.
