June 25, 2003Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay

Since Hanauma Bay was closed Tuesday, we designated Wednesday as beach/snorkeling day. After a little chaos and confusion with renting snorkel gear we got to the Bay only to find it full. There are only so many parking spaces in the lot and when it's full they put signs up so no one can drive down there.

We decided to keep driving and ended up stopping at the Blow Hole lookout. Supposedly like Spouting Horn on Kauai, it was no comparison. In fact, I'm not sure I even saw water come up through it at all. We did get to watch some sea turtles battling the waves in a little bay though. We gave Hanauma Bay another drive by, lot still full. But by the time we turned back around to head for Sandy Beach (yes, that's the official name), it was open. Yay!

The admission area sure had changed since I was there last. They've built a new ticket area complete with mini-museum type area and gift shop. And now you have to watch a video about protecting the coral reef and it's inhabitants. I guess there's been a lot of abuse with people standing on it and breaking parts off.

I've got sand in my shorts!

Ok, so finally we're on the beach. It's crowded, but now annoyingly so. Jeff and I sunned ourselves while the rest of the Pollard clan headed for the water for some snorkeling action. I never could convince Jeff to go out there. I guess he'd had enough with Ke'e and Molokini, but he probably missed some good stuff at Hanauma. Oh well, save it for next time!

One thing that he did do, which he failed to mention on his blog, was get buried in the sand. Neck to toe, completed covered. That was kinda fun, for me anyways. :) We stayed there until at least 6, if not later. A yummy dinner at California Pizza Kitchen (which is NOT on Ala Moana Blvd anymore [across from the Hilton Hawaiian Village], but rather in the mall, doh!), completed the evening.
