June 23, 2003Hometown Tour
A late start (to be the norm for the rest of the week), found us arriving at Pearl Harbor around 12:30pm. The next available boat was scheduled for 2pm, so we hung out looking in the museum and gift shop until then. This would be the third time I had visited the memorial, but still found it very moving. Next stop on the tour was Mililani. After getting slightly turned around, I was able to find the first house we lived in. I didn't even try for the second house though, I had no clue! We rode by the house school both myself and my brother attended, then grabbed some lunch at Maui Tacos. Mililani looks about the same. There are new stores in place of old ones, but other than that the biggest change is the theater. There is now a 14(?) screen theater next to the Town Center. And a Chili's near the Taco Bell. But most everything else was the same. From there we continued north west to the north shore where we stopped at Waimea Beach to put our toesies in the water. I love the north shore. It's so quiet and peaceful. On the way back through Hale'iwa we stopped at Aoki's for some shave ice. I don't know why the people on the islands love shave ice so much, but it's everywhere. Aoki's is a favorite of my family's, so we had to stop there. (This picture is for you, Dad!) A not-so-brief stop at Ala Moana back in Honolulu allowed Jeff some geek time at the Apple Store and gave the rest of us a chance to check our email. I guess two weeks is a long time for Jeff not to be amongst other geeky-type people :) And I mean that in the most endearing way! Honest, I do!
