June 17, 2003Grand Canyan of the Pacific

Tuesday was a slower, (supposedly) more relaxing day. We got a late start with a visit to the concierge to book our activities for Thursday. A short ride south to Hilo Hatties left us all a little poorer than when we started. Hilo Hatties is the perfect tourist trap/shopping. It has all of the Hawaiian clothing and trinkets imaginable. And of course we all fell for it.

Wailua Canyon

Wailua Canyon was the next stop on our journey. We had seen it from the air on Sunday, but wanted to get a closer look. It's what's considered the grand canyon of the Pacific. Obviously not as big as the Grand Canyon, it's still pretty impressive. The trip up and down the mountain was one I'd rather not repeat. Long, curvy roads, my favorite!! We hit a couple of stores on the way back down where I picked up my first Hawaiian shirt. You'd think after living there I would already own some, but alas, I do not.

Spouting Horn

Spouting Horn was our next destination. It's just a spot on the beach where the waves come up through the rocks like a spout. Hence the name. :) That was pretty cool. We also got so see a couple of sea turtles battling the waves. And of course, more chickens. When the rain moved in we headed out.

Down to Po'ipu to check out the beach action. It was early evening but the surfers were out in full force; the waves were pretty good. We pulled off and watched for a while as well as walked out on the beach. But 7, 7:15 some of us were hungry so off in search of dinner we went. The place we ate wasn't that great (for those who got the buffet), but I finally got my first meal with sticky rice. Mmmmm...sticky rice. I'm gonna have to eat more of that. Another quick jump in the hot tub before Security Bob threw us out, and that was day 4.
