April 22, 2002Ahh..the college lifeWhat an exhausting weekend. We had a great time in Radford, but it felt so weird to be back. Jeff & I hadn't been since graduation last spring. It's weird to go somewhere you spent 4 years of your life in, but not feel like you really belong anymore. After Jeff & I checked into the hotel (the new Comfort Inn, just opened on Tuesday, by the interstate), we headed straight to BT's, a favorite hangout. By then it was about 11pm, so it was just starting to get crowded. Luckily, they have a non smoking section upstairs where we always sit. (And of course that's never crowded, who wants to be that far away from the bar!) Whim staffers, new & old, were already there, so after some introductions we got to relax a little. They finally kicked us out at 2, so we all parted ways. Jeff, Brian & I headed over to 706 to meet up with the current staff, and to check out the apartment (this is where the guys lived our last year). Well, there aren't really even words to describe the place. The Christmas lights, decorations (liberated from various Radford stores), and bottles on the cabinets put there by Jeff, Brian, Mike & Roger, were all still there. Amazing. The only thing I can say is that there's no way I would live there! (sorry guys) :) Jeff & I finally got back to the hotel and crashed around 3:30. Up again at 10 to meet everyone in Heth at 11. Since there were some different people there we had introductions again, then headed to Macados for lunch. Trying to eat with 25-30 people is pretty crazy. But our waiter was awesome, we had our food quicker than I ever expected. The plan for Saturday was just to hang out and get to know each other, so back over to Heth we went, to one of the meeting rooms. Most of us shared what we're doing now and how Whim influenced that. Quad Fest was also going on outside, so before we all got organized in Heth, Lauren & I walked around campus. I was sad to realize that there wasn't anyone there I knew. But I guess after 2 years, you can't expect to know that many people. Well, unless you're Lauren, and know everyone! :) After the show and tell session, we headed back to BT's. And there we stayed until about 12:30. (This is 6 hours I'm talking about) Pretty much everyone else left after the "after dinner drink," so once again, Jeff, Brian & I walked over to 706 to say goodbye to everyone. Jeff & I got back to the hotel about 3, walked up the flight of stairs to our floor, stuck the key card in the door, and got a red light. Great. Locked out. By that time, we were so tired that it was just amusing. Back downstairs to the front desk. They rekeyed our cards and we were able to get in. Remember, this hotel only opened on Tuesday. The pool wasn't open, and there were only 2 tv channels, so we ended up getting a much lower rate. Fine by me! Now if they would have left us check out a little later! Since we had to be out by 11, we stopped by the Best Western to see Mike & Lauren and make breakfast plans. Well, breakfast turned into lunch since they had to see some people first. But it gave Jeff & I a chance to go to the bookstore, walk around campus, and to drive around town taking pictures. Not much has changed. Besides the big gaudy sign at the new entrance to campus, and Adams street finally being partially closed off, there's nothing new. Oh yeh, and they tore down the Brown building. It was always a little scary to go into, so it's probably for the best! So here I sit at work, Monday morning, so tired I can barely think straight, much less type correctly, trying to get enough energy to get some work done. But it was a good weekend. I met a lot of people, ate a lot of good food, and did a lot of reminiscing. Sometimes I can hardly believe that it's been (almost)2 years since we graduated, and 6 since we finished high school. Where does the time go?
