July 22, 2002Monday Mission 07/22/021. Do you remember your first encounter with computers? Tell me about that. Believe it or not, I didn't start using computers until I went to college. I had typed papers at my dad's office once or twice in high school, and played Word/Number Munchers in middle school, but that doesn't really count. The dorm I lived in freshman year had a computer lab in the basement. And that's where it all went downhill :) 2. How late can you stay up and still be functional the next day? Do you do that very often? Well, it depends on the day; what I've done the day before, and what I'll be doing the day I have no sleep. I'm starting to need more and more sleep though. I hate that. In college we used to stay up until 2, 3, 4, and still be productive the next day. Now, if I don't get at least 6 hours of sleep I'm pretty useless. 3. When was the last really good hug you got from another adult? Who was it and what was the situation? I suppose that would have to be Jeff. And does there have to be a situation to get a hug? 4. One thing about children is that they all like to draw. We all shared the same ability and skill level at one time. Do you still like to draw? (Not do you think you draw well, or do others, but do you like to?) If not, how come? Did you get discouraged at some point? I love to draw, color, paint. I'm not good at all, never claimed to be. But it's so much fun just to doodle. I get discouraged when what I'm doing is for a grade. Good thing I don't have to deal with that now! 5. I way overslept today. I had to head to work with no shower (don't get too close), and I am not in the best of moods. Have you ever overslept on a day you had something important going on? What's the story there? Oh yes. I oversleep a lot! I guess that's what happens when I don't get in bed earlier enough to get my 6 hours in before the alarm goes off! The worst time though (that I can remember right now), was, once again, in college. I stayed up really late studying for a final exam. And yep, you guessed it. I slept right through it. But I talked to my professor and he let me come in later that day to take it. :) 6. Ever go shopping for something you know you can't afford? You look at it and even think about how it will look when you get it home, somehow you justify the cost and believe it can happen? And just before you get to the counter come to your senses? What was the last thing you almost bought, but thought better of it? And why the heck do we do that to ourselves? Umm..no. Sure, I dream a lot, but I've never actually gotten to the register before I decided I couldn't afford it. 7. (It begins again...) It's all such a blur now. I'd asked you to help me wake up but the alarm didn't go off. It was 10 till and just I knew I'd be late. Somehow you got me here on time. How did you do that? It wasn't me! BONUS: Can't you see, you belong to me? How my poor heart aches with every step you take Every move you make ...

Wow. She actually THINKS I'm an adult. WOO HOO!! Posted by: The boy on July 22, 2002 2:01 PMwow.. Word/number munchers.. I loved those games. Used to be good at the math ones. Anybody know if they have Warez versions of those games? :) Posted by: Paul on July 22, 2002 2:20 PMI have one of them..I just can't remember which one... Posted by: Olivia on July 22, 2002 2:40 PM1. Do you remember your first encounter with computers? Tell me about that. I don't know if this can be considered a computer, but..... The year was 1978 and I was 4 years old. I got a Pong-type console game for Xmas, and that's how it all began. If you're referring to something that actually has a keyboard attached to it, then it was 1981 and I could be found playing "Lemonade" on any available Apple ][ at my elementary school. 2. How late can you stay up and still be functional the next day? Do you do that very often? I can be functional on any amount of sleep, but I prefer to get about 7 hours per night. 3. When was the last really good hug you got from another adult? Who was it and what was the situation? ...from my friend, Angel. She gives the best hugs imaginable (even though she's married and lives in Atlanta). And she doesn't need an occasion - she's just like her name says. 4. One thing about children is that they all like to draw. We all shared the same ability and skill level at one time. Do you still like to draw? (Not do you think you draw well, or do others, but do you like to?) If not, how come? Did you get discouraged at some point? Absolutely. I like to do anything that lets me be creative - art, music, graphics, Flash, etc..... 5. I way overslept today. I had to head to work with no shower (don't get too close), and I am not in the best of moods. Have you ever overslept on a day you had something important going on? What's the story there? The only times I've ever overslept is when thunderstorms knocked out my electricity (thus crappin' out my alarm clock). I strive on not being tardy. (I just wanted to say 'tardy')... heh heh..... 6. I don't like to shop. Blehhh..... Any single women out there who'd like to shop for me? Yup - didn't think so. 7. (It begins again...) It's all such a blur now. I'd asked you to help me wake up but the alarm didn't go off. It was 10 till and just I knew I'd be late. Somehow you got me here on time. How did you do that? What?! BONUS: Can't you see, you belong to me? I don't belong to no one, yo! Bring it! Posted by: Stovetop Topper Tennessee on July 22, 2002 4:00 PMLOL! I also overslept the morning of a final. I got up, realized what I did, I jumped in my chair, wheeled faster than I ever have before and got to the professor's office. He looked at me and said, "So, I guess you'd like to take your final, huh?" He was just giving me shit. Then he sent me to an empty classroom and let me take it. Whew! Posted by: Jack on July 22, 2002 8:54 PM1. Other than Oregon Trail? In high school, we had one of those Brother word processors with a little screen that showed one line at a time...then my family finally got a comp but only for word processing, no internet. My first introduction to email was at RU. It amazes me how my younger sisters in middle school argue over who has more "Buddies" on their IM list--I hadn't even used a typewriter at that point! 2. Well, I'll know better tomorrow morning how to answer that question....I have an all-day meeting that starts at 8am, it's 11:18pm; I'm waiting for Mike to come home from his big trip and he made me promise not to fall asleep before he gets here--damn I'm going to need some coffee in the morning! 3. Probably the one Mike's going to give me after we haven't seen each other for 13 days! 4. I used to love to draw and copy pictures from magazines...I don't do it anymore, now my big project is trying to make a website! 5. I think I have a disorder where I hit the snooze button in my sleep. Sometimes I will wake up an hour after my alarm has gone off and not remember ever hitting snooze--it's really bad!! (of course I set my alarm an hour before I want to wake up to compensate for this) 6. If I'm gonna splurge, I make the conscience decision and then put it on plastic or something. Anything worse than that (price-wise) is well thought out on some kind of excel spreadsheet (yes I am so anal it's not funny) 7. Listen question person, join the rest of us here on earth and make more intelligible questions! BONUS: I give up on these. Posted by: Lauren on July 22, 2002 11:28 PM1. Do you remember your first encounter with computers? Tell me about that. Just like Topper, my family had the "pong console". it was a rectangular box with two knobs. Much like an Etch-a-sketch, dialing the knob to the left made your "paddle" go up and to the right made the paddle go down. It was two player, and we definitely got our use out of it. From there we went to the Radio Shack TRS-80. i only played games on it, but my brother Mike would program on it, re-creating movie scenes from flicks like the Goonies with graphics and sound. (He was very young). We got the first family computer in 1990. On Christmas day, I opened Windows paintbrush, ran under the tree and snagge my brother's brand new "where's waldo" book and started freehanding Waldo. I was hooked from there. 2. How late can you stay up and still be functional the next day? Do you do that very often? I try to stay really flexible. I think I'm only worthless when I oversleep. I am used to pushing myself hard when I'm tired. I normally get about 6-7 hours of sleep on a workday. I try to be in bed before 2am, but that never happens. Last night for example, I finally cut the lights at 2:30 and was up again at 8:30 this morning. It all depends. Sleep is such a waste of time. 3. When was the last really good hug you got from another adult? Who was it and what was the situation? I've got to say- still the best hugger I can think of is Miss Olivia Lewis. Everyone else does the little "i don't want to hurt you" hugs. That (to me) equates to the limp "I don't want to crush you" handshakes, which leave me with the "gosh, is this hugging thing a formality or what?" feeling. Rock on Olivia. You're a damn good hugger. 4. One thing about children is that they all like to draw. We all shared the same ability and skill level at one time. Do you still like to draw? (Not do you think you draw well, or do others, but do you like to?) If not, how come? Did you get discouraged at some point? I love drawing. I doodle all the time. Lots of fun. 5. I way overslept today. I had to head to work with no shower (don't get too close), and I am not in the best of moods. Have you ever overslept on a day you had something important going on? What's the story there? Since my office has pretty flexible hours (well, pretty much any kind of hours) there isn't an "oversleep" factor anymore unless there's a meeting of course. but yes, I've slept through plenty of morning meetings. What are they thinking, trying to conduct business so early in the day? Damn them! 6. If I'm on the fence about an item, I'll hold onto it and walk around with it. Especially if it's a "this versus that" situation where I can only get one thing, I'll compare the two together, then leave one behind. 7. (It begins again...) It's all such a blur now. I'd asked you to help me wake up but the alarm didn't go off. It was 10 till and just I knew I'd be late. Somehow you got me here on time. How did you do that? I beat on your door to wake you but you didn't hear me. So I called the neighbors. They cut through your bedroom wall with a chainsaw and dragged you down three flights of steps. I hoisted you int he car and drove your sleeping ass to work. What? You think I'm going into that pig sty you call a room!? BONUS: Can't you see, you belong to me? Sorry. I don't get these lyrics. I only know Puff Daddy's re-mix of this. Wait-- Puffy's is the original, right? Posted by: Big Daddy B on July 23, 2002 11:33 AM"BONUS: Can't you see, you belong to me? Sorry. I don't get these lyrics." It's Sting! Man, am I the ONLY one who knew that?? Maybe there was another before him, but that's where I know these from. Of course, when I was singing it in my head to get the next couple of lines, Puffy's remix kept getting in the way :) Posted by: Olivia on July 23, 2002 12:52 PMI'm just teasing Olivia. Of course it's Sting. :) Well, it's Sting singing lead in the band Police from 1983, but those are just details. :) Posted by: Brian on July 23, 2002 2:07 PMPost a comment
