June 22, 2003Are we on Mars?

Silversword

Our last day on Maui...boy was that a quick visit. The flight to Oahu didn't leave until 5:30, but we headed out early to catch some more of the sites. Maui is shaped like a peanut and we'd only been on one side of one half of the island. There's only so much that can be done in two days I suppose.

But we took the extra time Sunday to visit Haleakala, a really big mountain on the east side of the island. It seemed to take forever to get up there, but finally we arrived. It was windy and cold and I was very glad to have been wearing pants. Mrs P accurately describes it as Mars-like. The red-dirt mountains are rocky and sparsely vegetated. One of the plants, the Silversword, is only found there, on Haleakala.

Hopefully we'll be able to return to Maui, for a longer visit, so we can see more of the island. I'm sure there's plenty of neat stuff we missed. But alas, for this trip, we had to leave. Another 18 minute hop and we were back on Oahu.

It definitely felt a little strange being back. Everything was pretty much as I remembered, but it did take me a while to reorient myself with the roads and where things were. Not having spent much time downtown and in Waikiki, I didn't really know my way around, but at least I recognized some landmarks.

After getting settled in our smaller than expected room we walked two blocks to Quizno's for dinner. None of us really wanted to fight the traffic to go anywhere further away. Plus, we had to sneak by the security guard. (We were only allowed to have 4 people in the room and we had 5. Whoops!)
